The Australiana Pioneer Village in the north of Sydney near the historic Hawkesbury town of Windsor is a beautiful little place, maintained by hobby historians and regional enthusiasts who want to keep the region's colourful past alive. The village is an open-air museum consisting of relocated authentic cottages, sheds, a church, businesses, a school and other buildings, most of them open to the public and lovingly furnished with period detail. It is a great place for families, with horse carriage rides, damper, picnic and barbecue facilities, and lots more on offer, all for a reasonable entry fee. The people working here are adorable - they know their stuff and enjoy re-enacting the good old times of Australia's first settlers.

Dropped in to see how it is now, around 25 years after the last visit. In the time, the village has been closed & re-opened. As it holds a lot of local historic buildings, it should not be allowed to close; but it needs a lot of support to expand and fill more spots. The entry fees are quite cheap, at $5 for an adult & $15 for a family. It could be an entertaining day out for the kids - getting to see what life was like here for the great (x?) grandparents generation. Plan a picnic & make a family day of it - there's plenty of room!

One of Australia's hidden gems. Operated and maintained by the most passionate group of people and one of the last places in the country to revisit our past.
