KUMON ALBANY CREEK EDUCATION CENTRE

Shan is the owner of the Albany Creek KUMON centre and I was very impressed with the questions that she asked me when I called her on the phone.She was very clear about the KUMON method and how it is designed to cultivate independent learning habits.The premises was clean and professional and the staff were all well presented and friendly. It was apparent to me that Shan is focussed and attentive. The children came in and sat down in a routinely manner and they all seemed to know what to do.Shan took her time to do a thorough assessment of our child’s skills and continued testing until she felt she had sufficient information to make an informed assessment.It seems apparent to me that most children could improve their skills with daily KUMON practice. The KUMON program seems comprehensive and well considered and I was impressed with the hand out material that I received.Shan seems open to feedback and showed herself to be strongly invested in working with parents to achieve the best outcome for the child.I called two other KUMON centres and Shan stood out as being willing to consider alternative ways to assist us since our child is not always available to attend the centre.

My son has been attending another Kumon centre for the past three years. He has loved going to Kumon twice a week and has achieved great results. However for personal reasons, when the centre shut down we decided to enrol him into Albany Creek Kumon centre. He was asked to repeat the previous tests that he already completed in the other Kumon centre. He obliged and completed the test. However during the test, the instructor Shan continuously disrupted him and quickly concluded that he was not within the time. She asked him to do more tests on the same day, giving him lower level assessments. It was obvious, that she deliberately wanted him to fail as she didn't wait for him to complete and continued to disrupt him in between! Following that she stated that her rules are different to the previous Kumon and he needs to go down 3 levels!! For a young child, who has worked very hard to achieve what he has achieved it was heartbreaking! Her justifications were baseless! She was stubborn and arrogant and didn't attempt to build a relationship with the child.Very methodical in nature in a controlling environment is the feel you get from this place!! Instead of identifying the barriers and giving words of encouragement, she was more focused on her RULES and bad-mouthing the other Kumon centre. Very unprofessional indeed! If you wish to instil a love for learning for your child, this is NOT the place to be!Disappointed!
