Where volunteers watch the sea to protect those that want to swim, surf in and around the ocean. Well done to them.

There is a wheelchair accessible mat that goes out onto the sand to the area between the dunes and the surf. The surf club has a couple of beach wheelchairs that can be booked to get access to the surf. The mat does have some dips that could do with leveling as my husband was having a hard time pushing me across the dipped joins in the mat in my push wheelchair. I probably would stay on the hard mat over the dune only if I had taken my motorised wheelchair as the softer mat may have sunk down under the weight and it is terrible having to clean sand out if it. There are toilet and picnic facilities outside the surf club and a play area for younger kids that includes swings. There is an outdoor shower to wash the sand off once you have finished your time on the beach. The beach is patrolled by surf lifesavers in their red and yellow uniforms. If you swim here you need to be able to cope with waves crashing in. It's not a flat, calm surf here. Saying that, kids were able to paddle in the wash in the shallows without too much issue. The shark patrol flies over this beach. Swim between the flags and you will have a good time here. Beach and surrounds much less populated than Reddall Park on Lake Illawarra, which was our first choice of destination until we met the crowd there fighting for space. There is a takeaway food shop not far from Shellharbour Surf Lifesaving Club to get your lunch or a drink.
