Melville Caves Picnic Area

Gorgeous spot for a day outing. Clean ablusuins, BBQ facilities, park benches and tables plus the most beautiful bush walks and rock formations. Highly recommend.

The Melville Caves picnic area has a large covered area, perfect for larger groups or bad weather, and picnic tables for smaller groups.Toilets are available close by, but I don't know much else about the facilities - I use the picnic area as my starting point for a number of hikes.The shortest hike is about 16 minutes from the picnic area, up to Melville Cave, then back down, but it gains elevation fast and can be tough on folk with a low fitness level.The longer hiking tracks are much easier on the legs and lungs, but they all take about 3 hours to complete.All tracks are marked well; sometimes by the mere presence of manmade steps and barriers, other times by bright orange arrows attached directly to the rocks, or to posts in the ground.I've managed to spot plenty of local wildlife on my hikes - kangaroos tend to hang out near the picnic area, and along the tracks I've seen wallabies, echidnas, wombats, eagles, blue tongue lizards, and a black cat that has adopted the area as his home.

Breathe taking scenes if you don't mind a bit of a hike. Pictures will never do it justice.

Lovely area! There are BBQs and enough picnic tables too. The toilets are a bit primitive but they are present.The Melville Caves track itself was closed for maintenance but the Southern Lookout track was beautiful and not difficult to negotiate, even with young children.

Great open space for the little ones to run around. Awesome lookout and trails to explore!

An extraordinary place .... keep your wits about you and you will have a whole lot of fun . Of course it's best if no-one is there but you .... take your rubbish home

Nice and accessible view of the surrounding area. I give it an extra star because it was 39° when I visited, but in the caves it was at least 5° cooler so that was a nice bonus.

Great area, flush toilets, running water, sheltered area and fire pits which are also sheltered. Table use just need to take your own chairs in shelter. Picnic tables about also. Lots parking. Camping areas available which look good. Short walks located around. Some climbs involved. Rockie terrains and scenery. Kites flying around and kookaburras calling. Great place to visit. Suitable walks for children also. Highly recommend if passing.
