Without licensed guide you can’t go off the view platform and walk around the lake. Best is to book a Wall of China tour from mungo visitor center so you can walk around to see shell and wombat bones of more than 10k years old. From the sand dune you’ll see magnificent horizontal line.

Without an authorised tour its very boring and nothing spectacular. There are several tour providers ranging in price and deals from $30 - $68. The more affordable options never answered their phones so we were unable to book a tour. Mungo Lodge offered the expensive $68 tour. It was for 2 hours and included the drive out and back. We declined on doing this tour as we could not justify the price for value over time.Go to Red Top Lookout. Far better view and experience.

Can't walk up to/on the dunes without a paid guided tour.

Viewing platform was good, but walking up on the walls themselves is great! Worth doing the guided tour to get the indigenous perspective. You will take a LOT of photos!

Good overall views, but I understand that a booked tour would take you into the dune formations and you should be able to see a lot more and get a better understanding of the people and history.

Walls of China Viewing Platform
I was surprised as I had read some reviews saying that the viewing platform was so far away from the walls of China that you really couldn't see the detail. It is true to a degree but is only a couple of hundred metres away. There is the lookout outside the park area which is a few kilometres away, certainly not a great view. I would suggest though doing one of the tours that will allow you to go right into the walls of China area. It is much more interesting to take a look among the mounds. If heading to Mungo keep an eye on the weather as rain can close the roads and the park very quickly.

Wonderful place to visit with some great views overall. You have to stick to the walkways where there are multiple view points and information boards, but we believe you can venture out onto the dune formations with a guide tour. The viewing platform was enough to see most of the formations anyway, and it's about a 5-10 minute walk from the carpark to the viewpoint. Stunning place, and a must visit when in Mungo National Park.
