Marong Cemetery
Marong is on the land of Dja Dja Wurrung traditional owners. This boneyard was established in 1872 and has many historical graves from the 19th century, along with a small amount of more recent memorials. It is a large, flat, with a lot of open space and a small number of existing graves. Parking is on the side of the road out front, or you can drive into the yard and park on the grass. There are no facilities, no drinking water, no seating and no shade. The paths are unpaved dirt and pebbles but there is no incline, so apart from rough ground it is a low level of difficulty for people with reduced mobility. Some of the older graves are off to the side in the long grass, so beware of snakes in warm weather. This cemetery has a few memorials that have been restored, cleaned and the lettering re-painted. It also has a plaque commemorating Richard Oates, buried there in 1906, who was co-finder of the 'Welcome Stranger' the worlds largest alluvial nugget of gold. Apparently it was so large they had to break it to get it on the scales.
