Cleve Cole Memorial Hut
Camped here on a summer visit before heading up Mt Bogong the next day. Trees and flowers in the campground are beautiful and the plumbing in the hut is very convenient. Keep food secure as the crows here are onto it. It's a stiff climb up from Big River if you're walking from Ropers hut. Worth taking the short detour to Howmans Falls too.

Built to memorialize Cleve Cole's death, crossing the Bogong High Plains in the winter of 1936. A very experienced cross country skier, he was trying with two friends to cross the plateau from the south and descend Staircase Spur when driving snow, wind and fog hit. Unable to see or find his way in the treacherously flat landscape, his party hunkered down in a snow cave to wait out the blizzard. After two days they began to run out of food, and after four they decided to make a last-ditch attempt to descend.Leaving almost everything behind – including skis – they crossed the plateau and walked downhill, linking arms to stay together. Look around and imagine traversing the plateau in zero visibility, having to check your compass every fifteen steps to make sure you're not going in circles. Unfortunately, they realized too late that they had descended into the wrong valley, and by that point Cleve Cole had wrenched his ankle and could not retrace his steps. The strongest member of the party hiked twenty-seven kilometers to fetch help from the nearest town, but was too late – by the time rescuers arrived, Cleve Cole was dying of hypothermia.

The king of hut experiences when back country ski touring. Well appointed and nicely located. If you plan for your trip then a great experience will be had. Not for the faint hearted to access on winter.

Solidly built lodge with typical basic high country hut facilities including wood fired heating, shared sleeping quarters and a few which go beyond the norm including running water (assuming the stream is running). Not very light inside but definitely snug and a safe port in any storm.

The highest Victoria high country hut and the most equipped Victoria high country hut. You can even have a cold shower there. Good dinning table and seats for hikers to socialise. Some rabbits around this area.

Spacious and beautiful hut with rock walls, plenty of sleeping space, tables, benches and a good sized slow combustion stove. Good water supply. There are some large areas outside with scattered trees for camping. Pit toilets are a short walk from the hut.A classic and iconic hut in the ski & bushwalking community. A small diversion from the AAWT can be taken to stop here. The surrounding summit ridge is exposed to the full fury of severe weather. At any time of the year prepare for quick and dramatic changes of weather, rain, ice or snow, and bring a beanie, warm middle layer jacket/vest, waterproof gloves, waterproof pants & jacket. Backpacks should be fully lined & spare dry socks & base layers packed well inside. Some mobile phone reception at hut & more in areas surrounding the hut.
