Lake Copeton

This eastern side of Copeton dam is accessed by Howell rd: sealed & in fairly good condition.This would be a primitive camping area. There are a few small cleared areas under cypress pines & gums. Most of the campsites are now under water due to the high levels of the dam - at present 93% full. There are no facilities apart from a rubbish collection bin.Vehicle access on ungraded tracks near the water varies greatly with weather conditions; I suggest 4x4 vehicles with recovery gear is best. These tracks are suited to walkers.The phone reception is unreliable & non existent in many areas.There is an unsealed road giving access to the former Conrad mine from the now dismantled village of Howell.The nearest food, water & gas supplies are at Gilgai on the Inverell to Bundarra rd. Most everything else you may want is available in Inverell, including laundromat, hardware, camping supplies. There's a Woolworths, Coles, Big W.

Water levels very low, a bit disappointing

Beautiful scenery of the lake. Can see the huge impact of the drought with very low water levels. Huge eater holding capacity if full, but not been so for decades.
