Straight up its hard not to like Professor Felipe as he's just one of those guys. That's all nice right, but what about the BJJ?Felipe previously taught my son at a BJJ chain before opening Alavanca. Upon attending the BJJ chain I immediately noticed that Felipe seriously stood out as an instructor but I also noticed a big difference when he left.It goes without saying that I have been so impressed by Felipe that I followed him over to Alavanca. This is even though the school location is more of a personal disadvantage for me to get to (as the chain had a school that was closer to my house). But it was just a no-brainer, so I made the switch.Furthermore the difference in my son and his application to training now he is back training with Felipe at Alavanca is nothing short of profound.If you want to train under someone that really knows their stuff yet also knows how to pass that knowledge on (that's a rare combo), well you have found the place. It just feels different to other places and the results speak for themselves.Lastly, I can also see that my son has a real affection for him, the instructors are a good mix of strong yet gentle and they are awesome with kids.

I have been training with Professor Felipe for the past 3 years and his the ability to impart his vast BJJ knowledge in the best way for you is impressive he will always ensure that you are learning, pushing yourself and developing. He has fostered a great community that is welcoming to all. Whatever you want to get out of BJJ Alavanca Jiujitsu Academy will provide.

I love coming here. I'm a woman in my 40s with no previous experience of martial arts or self defence, and I didn't even know what BJJ was*, but I wanted to do something to build my confidence and someone recommended it to me. I've been doing yoga most of my life so stepping into this world for the first time a few weeks ago was nerve-wracking. I was pleasantly relieved to be greeted by kind and friendly staff (thank you Laura!) and even welcoming class members. So much so that I did my first class without really thinking about it. Prof. Felipe and Chris are clearly very knowledgable and have set up the classes so that everyone feels safe and included, whatever your level. So far it's been challenging, fun and inspiring, but the thing I've liked the most is the genuine atmosphere of respect in the room. Very much recommend just trying out a class here.*Thank goodness I didn't look up BJJ on Youtube before I started, I don't think I ever would have come!!

As a female in my mid 40s with no previous martial arts experience I thought I will feel intimidated stepping on the jiujitsu mats and was actually doubting that it will be a sport for me. However from the very first moment in Alavanca Academy I knew I was wrong. Professor Felipe and Coach Chris are very welcoming, they always make me feel safe during classes, they explain and demonstrate the movements very clear and make the whole training session very fun and enjoyable. Also, how amazing are all members there!!! - Always very respectful, funny and friendly. My BJJ journey just has started and I am very excited to continue to learn at Alavanca Academy. The gym is great! It provides a really inclusive / team environment. Professor Felipe is very knowledgeable and friendly. The gym is great for everyone to learn BJJ whether you are a beginner or advanced.

I highly recommend Professor Felipe’s new BJJ academy. I’ve been training with Professor Felipe for over 2 years. He is a great teacher, very welcoming and inclusive to everyone. I wish him all the best for the opening of his new gym in Randwick.

Our 5yr old goes here and loves it (so do we his parents). Alavanca have an excellent age separation system and really understand how to teach kids based on age. They have 3-5yr, 5-6yr old, 7-9yr etc... other schools we tried bunch 6yr-11yr together which doesn't work as 6yr old kids require simplicity, whereas 10years can handle detail. We've been to jiujitsu schools in brazil too which we're excellent but we prefer alavancas system for kids. Felipe (owner) and his teachers keep the class super fun, gentle, but strict in a nice way. The instructors really care about the kids, big on safety. They also encourage the kids to try hard. There is a great balance of learning technique, doing exercise and also simple rolling, implementation (my son loves the rolling most). They also teach some basic anti bullying techniques as part of the class. There is a lovely family vibe and a great positive, friendly energy. Even tho Felipe and his instructors could destroy most people, you wouldnt know it. they are the warmest nicest people, super humble. High recommend.

Best BJJ in town, great team spirit, both competitive and supportive. Felipe is an amazing coach who is able to make you feel super confortable from the first second of your first class.Very convenient location and timetable!

I have been training with professor Felipe for the past 5 years. Felipe is a great BJJ mentor who has a lot of experience teaching and helping his students up skilling their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Alavanca have a fantastic training environment. I strongly recommend Alavanca BJJ if you are looking for a new gym to start training or improving your jiu jitsu game.

I have a 7 year old boy who absolutely loves this gym and the coaches. Even when he isn’t feeling 100% he always wants to go to jujitsu at Alavanca.The coaches make my son feel comfortable with their enthusiastic encouragement to be safe , confident and also respectful.Alavanca is teaching my son the necessary skills in life while also giving him a path to being healthy and fit.We highly recommend this academy to all kids of all ages.
