I’ve been a VIP member with Strand Fitness for almost a year, and whilst I was initially impressed (even convinced my partner to switch over from his gym), my opinion has slowly changed. As a new mum who values health and fitness, I specifically chose Strand Fitness for the facilities, Pilates classes and crèche availability. Recently, there has been some changes which have impacted my overall satisfaction.Firstly, the casual crèche fees have increased from $5 per session to $8 (maximum of one hour). I understand prices change, but I received no correspondence regarding this change. I was told emails have been sent but I haven’t received anything. I’ve checked I am subscribed to Strand Fitness emails, which I am, so not sure if there is a communication issue here?Secondly, crèche hours have changed which has impacted my ability to attend some of the classes offered so having a VIP membership is essentially useless. Again, I received zero correspondence regarding this change. I booked in for a class yesterday, packed up my 17 month old and arrived over at the gym only to discover crèche was not available. I was with my partner (who also wanted to train) so we ended up heading over to Central to at least get some sort of session in (crèche available at Central). For parents out there, you would know this disruption can mean the difference between going to bed at 7pm or 10pm. I also wasn’t able to get my Pilates fix. Hopefully I don’t get stung with the “late cancellation” class fee (another change recently implemented, again with no correspondence. I discovered this new change via a friend).Thirdly, I have considered adding unlimited crèche to my membership but have been told I would need to sign an additional 12 month contract to access this benefit. I’m concerned about committing to this length of contract given the ongoing changes and the risk of being stuck paying $9.95 for “unlimited” crèche on top of my VIP membership when I wouldn’t be able to make use of it. I don’t think the crèche should be marketed as “unlimited” when there are restricted hours and changes seem to occur often. To me, unlimited means more flexible access but when you can only train between specified hours on certain days of the week, it makes things challenging and is certainly not “unlimited” in my opinion. This also means my partner and I can’t train together or use the other incredible facilities available together.I understand the nature of running a business and that changes inevitably need to occur along the way, but my biggest frustration is that I have received zero correspondence to advise me of such changes. Obviously the issues I have raised above aren’t relevant for many others who attend Strand Fitness and in business you can’t please everyone either, but to our little family it’s a big deal. Being a young family new to Townsville with limited family support, trying to juggle our work, son, health and fitness goals and just life in general is no simple task. It’s for these reasons, we will not be renewing our membership and wouldn’t recommend Strand Fitness for those seeking a family friendly gym.

I've been a member of Strand Fitness for many years and it has always been a great place to work out. It has lovely clean facilities, friendly staff, and a wonderful creche that has a range of engaging activities for the kids. The 24-hour access has come in very handy too!

Lots of equipment, amazing helpful staff, great environment, to sum it up it’s practically everything you’d look for when finding a gym!

Strand Fitness is by far the best gym in Townsville! Cbd is large and has lots of different rooms and equipment to explore. I love using the sauna and magnesium pool for recovery. The staff are always very friendly and happy to help out.

Visited this gym several times while on holidays. Staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Even took time to show me around.Great range of machines.

My son wants to go to the gym. He has been going casually for 2 weeks at $15 a time and plans to join up for a years membership. I have been receiving texts and emails about a huge" one day sale for the 25th Feb. So we drive all the way in there only to be told that the sale is only for VIP memberships and only for those who pay via direct debit. So if you want to pay up front and for the year there is no discount. This is false and misleading advertising. Not impressed at all. Having said that
