JAMES, AN ABILITY CARPENTERMy partner and I wanted to renovate our bedroom extending it into the entrance veranda which had become a closed in catch-all-room. Problem was, our renovation was too either too small for most builders or they were busy, or not interested in doing a reno for less than hundred thousand dollars. We searched local outlets along with Google and Apple local contacts and we found James, a skilled and experienced craftsman, at Ability Carpenters.We wanted a wall partition between an open wardrobe and the bedroom, extending it through French doors into a redone and enclosed veranda.James knew exactly what we wanted and at our first meeting he explained how he would do and suggested the type of windows and French doors we and where we could have them made, which we did, at Steptoes in Preston. We accepted James’ suggestion of a raised, peaked ceiling in the enclosed veranda, which has enhanced its spaciousness and design.After six weeks windows and French doors were ready, James was ready to start. I took on the roles of project manager and carpenter’s assistant, which worked very well and were thus able to keep our budget under control. James put me onto Lockwood Auctions, and I bid successfully in a lot of dressed jarrah and another of Tasmanian oak. James made use of the jarrah, milling it on site, fashioning frames and architraves and working it into the wall partition, a tricky, precision job. The Tassie oak became the new floor of the extension.Our project is done and we have moved back into our bedroom, which looks like we’re in a French coastal village near the sea, It has been a delight working with James, a craftsman so skilled and experienced, who readily understands what is needed and will come up with a host of suggestions and the right and most creative solutions.We could not have achieved what we did had it not been for James, an excellent ability carpenter and builder.Cherie & Pablo, Thornbury, VIC July 2021
