This council/community displays no respect for Indigenous people of Wakka Wakka heritage. A Wakka Wakka man (through his fathers family) who cannot get get a proof of Aboriginality because they just simply don’t know who you are. All other councils or Indigenous corporations always take into account traditional owners. Cassowary coast, Cairns, Gippsland Victoria, Bundaberg regions to name a few all take into account T.O’s.Cherbourg council amazes me that they do not offer this to traditional owners.Thankfully his mother is also indigenous and from different lands in Queensland and they offer the service of proof of Aboriginality for people who have family heritage in these lands.Cherbourg Council needs to rethink their strategy for proof of Aboriginality forms and get with their bothers and sisters from different missions and stop this biased toward T.O’s who weren’t raised in the area.Just because they weren’t raised there doesn’t mean it’s not their country or Tradition lands. We have deep respect for Wakka Wakka lands and people but not for this particular strategy. Please consider taking into account proof of family history and heritage like the rest of the country.
