I can highly recommend Yarra Architects. We had tried several design and build companies to help with an extension to our existing 3 bedroomed home. However, it seemed that our ideas were not being recognised. Then we contacted Allan at Yarra Architects who seemed to grasp exactly what we wanted at our first meeting. Allan has a very professional attitude and open to ideas and suggestions which we welcomed. As the State was in lock down during the whole design process, Allan managed to get our vision through the design, planning and approval stages without any problems.

We shortlisted Yarra Architects because they were designing a renovation plan for a landmark property in the Dandenongs. We selected Yarra Architects over several others because they were genuinely interested in helping us achieve our vision, were highly professional with their approach and had a very strong understanding of the Bushfire Management, Significant Landscape and other Overlays relevant to building in the Hills.Allan built trust and rapport with us early because he was practical, listened to our key design briefs (space, light and storage) and didn’t try to overcomplicate our vision. He was quick in understanding our existing hills cottage and our site, he brought in other professions early on (Licenced Surveyor, Bushfire Consultant and Geotechnical Engineer) to understand the potential risks and opportunities. We were impressed by his local knowledge and ability to bring in the right people to take the next steps in a logical sequence.Allan worked very hard for us to translate the design to local planning conditions and modelled our home’s designs into a three-dimensional program that we could easily walk through and fly over. A big plus for us was that this fine tuned several of the design aspects without the costs of having to adjust them on a building site.Morgan was very helpful in providing selected samples and swatches for the interior design and fit out of our home. Morgan knew our brief well and assisted in sharing ideas.Yarra Architects lodged the planning application during the early stages of COVID. The plans were approved in short time with no back and forth with Council because of the high degree of detail in the plans that Allan submitted on our behalf.During construction, our builder had very few questions about the designs, which was one less stress for him (and us) during a difficult period to build. We’ve a circa 1918 Californian bungalow privately located at the base of the Dandenong Ranges. It represents a traditional period piece of Melbourne architecture within the charm of Ferntree Gully. The obstacle in 2022 however being that it’s tired, aged, with a layout not conducive of modern family needs.The project challenge was firstly the conflict of multiple possibilities which conflicted with attempts to develop into a cohesive design; then compounded with the white tape of councils, permits, engineers and surveyors that confused the development of a clear scope of work; and finally, the process to locate a trusted builder.Enter Yarra Architects.Allan and Morgan provided us with several viable possibilities of external construction and internal design, they negotiated the council and surveyor compliances to ensure we remained within reality and found us a trusted builder through a time of construction upheaval. This was all completed in a relaxed, consultative manner with expert knowledge of the local area.The project is now underway toward an outcome where an old three-bed, one bath house will be reborn into an externally period home, with three bedrooms, three bathrooms and three modern living zones and an entertainer lifestyle.Thank you, sincerelyPaul and Susan
