Warrigal Waterhole (Painted Rock)
This is a magical place, with a plethora of interesting rock art remarkably close to Mount Isa. It's not that easy to find though, as there is a maze of 4WD tracks to get there, and the Google Maps route after the main road is incorrect (it follows the power line track). The actual location and the turnoff from the main highway is accurate and well marked, however. The track starts on the right shortly after the Telstra tower turn off if you are driving from Mount Isa. The information board at the start of the track tells you to take the left fork. This means veer left immediately after you go through the gate. Don't do what we did and take the left turn 500m after that, which takes you on an unwanted extreme 4WD adventure along the power lines track. If you find yourself on the power lines track, you are going the wrong way! Instead follow the first red arrow to the right and then ignore the second red arrow at the next major junction (takes you to the power lines again) and keep right. The track is very rough and rocky and definitely needs a high clearance vehicle but is not steep. At the end of the track is a metal bin and an old post which once held a sign. The site is to the left along a short track.

Warrigal Waterhole (Painted Rock)
Such a sacred and beautiful place to visit. Just a few minutes out of Mount Isa on the Curry Road is the gated entrance to Painted Rock or Warrigal Waterhole. This land has been home to the Kalkadoon people for more than 60 000 years. It's a beautiful sacred place and the paintings are very old so be respectful and take all your rubbish with you when you leave.

You will need a 4wd to access, and be sure close the gate when you get in and out. Google map will show you far way so when you enter turn left straightaway then up hill turn right then follow the Google map then you will reach the point. Lower you tyre pressure will be easy to access.

Lovely peaceful spot even though rough road getting there. Amazing the painting has survived all these years exposed to the sun and wind.
