Working man’s pub transformed into a cozy, black ceiling, working man’s pub with free board games, big led screens, top food, HUGE sized meals and lots of old worldly Newcastle character! Great value for money!

Having a good system in place to support an on-tap selection of 21 craft brews is a must. Grain Store in Newcastle East has this nailed. You make your selection from numbered printed lists with tasting notes, and transcribe the numbers onto a beer paddle ($17) picture. The bar person takes this diagram and replicated it in beer—five 110ml pours—passing it back with your diagram forming the key to what you’re drinking. My two favourite brews came from One Drop in Botany, a Red Plum Sour ($8/325ml) that was like biting into a sharp red plum, and The Fiddler ($9/325ml) that has a big green burst of grassy hops before a grapefruit finish. I also enjoyed Ocean Reach Tropical XPA ($8.50/325ml) for the summery fruity post-beach vibes. In the eats, they neatly avoid the potato chip crisis by making skin-on beauties from real spuds. Load ‘em up with gravy, bacon and liquid cheese for five bucks: it’s worth it. It does make a burger and fries kind of pricy, but the Loui ($22) with crisp dry chicken breast, lettuce and creamy blue cheese sauce cut with spicy buffalo, did deliver a solid burger experience. A good charry wagyu beef patty is the basis of the WhoopAss beef burger ($23) loaded up with American cheddar, onion rings, jalapeños and both buffalo and smoky barbecue sauce. It’s a messy two fist experience that stops just shy of going too far.

We visited for lunch as a family of 5 (2 adults/ 3 kids) for lunch on a Sunday. I would highly recommend making a booking as it was quite busy. The tables are close together and it gets loud, which is perfect if you have kids. Moreover the tables have checkers, chess and snakes & ladders which is a great way to fill the time. Service was slow and meals took a while but the food was quite good. The burgers were the stand out, the salad not so much. Lots of beers on offer and the staff were very helpful in picking the right one if you're overwhelmed by the coffee.

Huge range of craft beers on offer. $15 taster paddle (5 small cups, approximately 100ml each) available for you to sample the different beers available. If you really like one, you can also consider getting a squealer (approx 1L bottle) of a beer of your choice to bring home.Good bar food also available.Great place to be if you love beer

Parking was not easy, but it is a very short walk (100 mtrs) from end of the line of the light rail at the top end of town. As it was my first time here, it would have been nice to have known that I needed to get the menu ourselves from the bar, and would have also been nice to know that we had to order from the bar. Once that was sorted, the meal was very nice. Noise carries, and was loud for a non busy night. There is a lot of history within this building.

Huge selection of beers on tap. Reasonable prices and good service. Heaps of tables and old style booths with games you can play while eating/drinking. Food was also very good. I would recommend and definitely go back again.

Definitely my go to place for pub food when I’m down this end of Newy. Decent items on the menu combined with a huge list of craft beers to try.I had a pulled pork wrap with loaded fries last time. Hit the spot on the night.

Not too bad.Good vibe. Friendly staff.Tasty beer!Ordered steak/wings and the wings.Got 1kg+ of wings and all pieces were the upper part of the wing (drumstick/upper-arm) which was disappointing. All in all
