From the sign in the reserve:Council resolved in February 1949 to name this reserve Boongarra". The name Boongarra was recommended by the West Oatley Progress Association and Oatley District Improvement League. The name Boongarra is an Aboriginal word meaning 'quiet place' or 'resting place'."
