The Barn Steakhouse
This is the second time we have been and the staff were welcoming, attentive and friendly. We enjoyed the food although had a slight mishap with my steak being almost blue when I wanted medium rare. Hubbys was cooked great but they did notice I wasn't too happy and kindly took it back to cook it longer and gave me extra sauce. But overall a nice experience.

Had a great evening! Kicked back with a few cocktails in the piano bar before heading into the restaurant for sensational steaks. The entrees were quite average, but the steaks were truly superb. Their chocolate pudding in a mug is absolutely delish. We were initially going to share, ended up ordering a serve for each. Enjoyed a tour of their wine cellar and was fascinating to see a wonderful collection of wines from all over the globe, they even had a Zinfandel, which was a great match to our steaks. To sum it up … good ambience, great service, fantastic steaks, splendid wine and perfect pudding.

I was told this restaurant knows how to cook a steak. I confirm that The Barn indeed cooks a great steak. They also have a nice selection of wine by the glass.I had the Mayura Station Wagyu eye fillet with a glass of 2014 Balnaves Cabernet Merlot. Sure, you can hardly go wrong with wagyu, but I recommend dropping by to check it out for yourself the next time you're in Mount Gambier.

My partner has wanted to dine at the Steakhouse for years and each time we’ve visited Mount Gambier we’ve thought “hey, next time for sure”. This time we made sure to make a reservation and my partner was pumped to experience what some reviews described as the best steak ever. The location itself was ideal as we were staying at The Barn so we were able to walk down to the Steakhouse and not worry about parking or having a wine or two.The venue and ambience was quite reflective of the name of the establishment and we were surprised at how many tables they can fit into a room. We were promptly seated and offered food and drink menus. We appeared to have a different member of staff taking orders for drinks and for food.I asked for a carafe of their Chardonnay and was asked by staff taking our drinks order whether that was white wine. Now I can’t be sure whether he was asking me to confirm I meant the white or whether he doubted I knew what type of wine Chardonnay actually was. I confirmed we wanted the white wine formerly known as prince - sorry, Chardonnay. We let him know we were ready to order food and he informed us someone else would attend to that. Our food order taker person appeared much more friendly and personable. She attended not too long after our drinks were served and we were eating approximately 20 minutes after having been seated. We were asked how the food was at about the halfway mark and let them know we were fine because at that point we were still giving the meal a chance and trying not to think of the negatives or our high hopes. My partner had ordered the 400g porterhouse steak with a peppercorn sauce. As other reviewers also noted, the steak was hard to cut through in some places. He expected it to be tender and medium-rare throughout and was disappointed with the consistency of cooking. He thought the sauce was too little and the potato that came with his steak was not cooked consistently (hard in the middle).I ordered the prosciutto wrapped chicken breast pocketed with feta and spinach, and was surprised to find one small piece of chicken breast that actually contained this feta and what looked like a single leaf of spinach. The feta paired well with the chicken and I wish the leg of chicken that they placed on top a potato contained this too. The chicken itself was not tender and I only really enjoyed the piece on the side with the feta. The broccolini was flavourless even with the sauce, as was my potato (which my partner ate saying at least it was cooked through). All in all, we didn’t think our food and experience was worth the hype or the price. We paid a little over $130 for our meals and wine and expected a lot more. We were quite disappointed that the meal we had at another establishment the night prior (which was about half the price of our food here) was more flavourful and more tender than the Steakhouse.Unfortunately I’m unsure what the Steakhouse can do to rectify their food inconsistencies, as other reviewers have identified similar concerns with their dining experiences with little to no change.

Very disappointing meal tonight whilst on holiday in mt. Gambia. We had been told about this restaurant by different friends all with good memories.Food was ok… for the price it was poor… overcooked very small scallops , a vinaigrette for the oysters which tasted of canola oil and was cloudy. The steaks were good ( which is the main reason to visit ) and couldn’t be faulted.Service however was atrocious. We got pointed to our table and then left us .. 10 minutes later another waitress gave us menus. We probably had 5 different waitress serving us .. never a good sign…, no one “owned” us or cared. At the end of meal all plates , glasses and napkins were removed … and there we sat for 15 minutes before loosing the will to live ( and or order dessert and coffee) before asking a hurried waitress passing is we could have the bill. We informed the cashier ( you have to pay at a desk !!) and she said oh shame and took no further interest. The bill was $235 for 2 ……….Don’t try and be a special occasion / posh ! restaurant when your device is worse than a pub.

Now i am really sorry to say what i am about to say ..we have been twice before and never a problem but this time not 1 of us was happy .. so we ordered the 1 kilo new york steak ..it had to be sent back coz it was so thick it was just not cooked ..it was seriously raw ..that took extra 10 mins to cook..now my daughter and myself ordered the 400g rump ..both were just stringey and hard to cut but note it was medium rare ..mine actually dont know what it was but i swear it wasnt the weight nor did it even look like rump ..now remember this is no $20 steak ok ...it felt like an after thought....my partner ordered the house special the shorthorn steak ..it was just tough dry and hard to swallow and he did mention to staff it was horrible ..he was hungry managed half way and then couldnt do it anymore ...look i really dnt know what happened we did book for 7.30 ..maybe coz it was late they ran out of good quality produce ..the place was full of people so i dnt know if anyone else had problems that night ..lets face it ...its not a cheap meal ..but the disappointed is priceless for 4 people

This is our second time eating at the Barn Steakhouse. And it was just as good as the first. Both my bf and I got the Duck for entree, we both got it the first time we came and have been dreaming about it ever since. And the chef delivered. The meat just fell off the bone. The flavours of this plate are simple and recognisable but yet complex and mind blowing and palette pleasing. The duck will be our forever choice for the entire. Now this personally on behalf of both of us is not a complaint at all, while we both happy with the fact that as soon as we were finished our entrees that our mains arrived but we both felt it was slightly rushed as the waitress had nowhere to put our mains as our finished entree plate were still on the table. And with the awkward swap of our plates we were left with out forks for our main meal, which again wasn’t a big deal as we were easily able to get the attention of a waiter who was more than happy to help.I got the 400g porterhouse steak and the bf got the filet Mignon. We both very much enjoyed our steak. But because of the lack of forks we found that the slight wait time that our baked potatoes had cooled down a bit. But again still delicious and we were both very happy. For dessert we got the special, which was a deconstructed mango cheesecake. We both very much enjoyed. And the flavours and textures complemented each other perfectly.I got a French martini, which was topped with freeze dried strawberries. This cocktail was smooth and well balanced. Even the bf who doesn’t drink much had a sip and enjoyed it.The customer service we received was wonderful, we were greeted upon arrival and shown to our table with little wait. Through out our dinner we were met with friendly staff and good customer service. This is one our favourite restaurants in SA and we will be back again.

Tasty food, good serving portion We got wagyu tataki, oysters, porterhouse steak, chicken, eton mess and creme brulee. Decent menu and wine selections. Intimate atmosphere. Quite a bit of tourist the night we went there, but still ok. We stay a night at their accomodation as well, it has a nice garden view.
