Low Head Penguin Tours
The Low Head Penguin Tour is a popular wildlife experience in Tasmania, Australia, that offers visitors the chance to observe the little penguins in their natural habitat. The tour takes place at Low Head, a coastal town located about 40 minutes from Launceston in the north of Tasmania. The little penguins, also known as fairy penguins, are the smallest species of penguin in the world, standing only about 30 centimeters tall. The penguins come ashore at night to breed and raise their chicks, and the Low Head Penguin Tour offers a unique opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat without disturbing them. The tour takes visitors on a guided walk along the beach, where they can watch the penguins waddling back to their burrows after a day of fishing at sea. The tour guides provide commentary on the penguins' behavior and biology, as well as information on the conservation efforts being made to protect the penguin population. The Low Head Penguin Tour operates from September to March each year and is a popular attraction for visitors to Tasmania. Visitors are advised to dress warmly and bring a torch for the tour, as the penguins are most active at night.

A wonderful experience for our family. We we were the only people in our tour, so we got an even better experience. Dress warmly - it is VERY cold this time of year!

Get to see the penguins up-close. Guides were really professional and informative. Best to book tickets in advance. Fantastic experience!

This was an interesting experience and funny to watch the penguins interaction after dark. The head guide knew a lot about the penguins, their behaviour and the patterns that they would follow for the evening; clearly she has been doing this for a long time. Not really sure what the point was in booking the tickets as there were plenty of walk ins on the night who got the same level of treatment as those who had pre-booked. The price tag was also quite steep and probably not the best value for money.

The tour ended early (was told it’s from 9pm-10:30pm but our guide ended earlier at 10pm, while the other two groups are still on their tour). They also put us at a spot with only 4-5 penguins passed by, while the other two groups see soo many more (10-20 penguins or even more). I don’t know based on what they assign us to different groups but we feel our tour experience is not as good as expected.

Such a great experience. We were in a small group of 10 with Zayn as our guide. He chatted away to us while we waited for the penguins to return. We then saw up clise the most amazing spectacle of penguins returning to their burrows. Cannot recommend enough!

We had a great experience the guides were knowledgeable and helped us find the penguins, even though the conditions weren't ideal. We were able to get up close to the penguins and watch them play in the surf and walk up to their burrows. We also enjoyed the wallabies on the short hike to the beach. It was really windy and early June so quite cold on the beach, so be prepared if you plan to go.

Expensive but definitely worth the money!! You will see the cute penguins up and close (literally running past your feet) and you will learn more about these amazing creatures than any website could teach you.. the tour guides are also the keepers and you can tell the passion in their presentation!
