I came across this place from TripAdvisor as the top bakery to visit in St. Kilda. The place is cozy, with many magazines stacked on the side of the bakery and with an array of cakes, pies, and tarts displayed on the window. We ordered the Apple Crumble and their famous Plum Cake. They were out of this world!!I had a lovely chat with the current owner Gideon, who told me about the history of this place (89 years and counting), his love for engineering (hence the magazines), and preserving old cake recipes. The place feels very homey as everyone knows everyone, and we felt very welcomed.I will definitely come back again for more cakes and more stories!

Large variety of traditional european cakes. My Chocolate Kugelhoupf slice was as delicious as expected. A special cafe to stop by.

The rose tinted nostalgia…. Popped in for a cup of tea and slice of cake while my daughter played footy around the corner. I used to live close by and have always been a regular here. Family visits from overseas, parties, weddings, birthdays we would always buy from monarch and loved it. When I moved away from st Kilda I would visit and enjoyed sitting in. Warm, cozy, lots of design magazines and books to brows through while watching the world pass by on a cold afternoon….. it reminded me of European adventures and the time before cookie cutter cafes that all look the same .I’m afraid things have changed… no cheery welcome, the staff seemedConfused and unaware. The Decor, once welcoming and “visiting the grandparents” style shabby is now decrepit, the vibe messy and unkempt rather than eclectic.I sat for 15 mins ( one of two People there ) and nothing…. Awkward silence…. I’m afraid the time before was the same. I just got up and left quietly…. What a shame. But that’s nostalgia for you…. Best not to try and re live it.

Cake Heaven. So authentic, travelling back in time. I loved it so much. The cheesecake and baby Kugel are just incredible, add an ice-cream to it and eat it warm. Yummy yummy and such a peaceful and out-of-this-world place!

Simply excellent! We visited Monarch Cakes recently and on a Saturday after lunch at Sister's of Soul and as vegans I didn't expect too much luck in the not too sweet cake department. Lots of choice on the street, but I cannot recommend Monarch highly enough. We chose the dark chocolate and toasted coconut slice which was heavenly and just right in terms of sweetness. We had a take away coffee as well which was very good and the 2 young members of staff were helpful in choosing our desert and extremely polite and friendly. If you haven't visited Monarch Cakes, you should.

Amazing cake shop. I think I had the best cup of coffee in my life there and paired with their famous Kugelhoupf was amazing. It’s a Melbourne experience you have to enjoy! I walked past and was struck by this amazing fragrant scent of baked goods…. so I had to stop and find the source!!!! You won’t be disappointed!!!!! It’s like stepping back in time to a baked goods wonderland!!!!

☺️cutest café i’ve ever been to, love the style, love the story, love how they showing to the people walk passed. Everything just so extraordinary, so original. Good thing doesn't need The fancy decorations. The sweet here are always good, always the same. Owner maybe not there, but the quality aren't change a bit.

Traditional cake at its best. Love the signature plum cake and chocolate kooglhouph. The cherry crumble with the fresh pastry and fillings was good as well. Personally, I preferred the whole chocolate kooglhouph over the sliced one as the balance of chocolate and cake was better. A great place to spend your tea time, soaking in the old school ambience.
