Wattle Flat Heritage Lands Southern Section

This place is both exhilarating and disappointing. The concept, planning and implementation are fantastic, but it is disappointing to see it so neglected overgrown with weeds. Shame, really.

Right beside the Sofala Road as you drive through Wattle Flat is heritage lands area. This was the former site of the Solitary Gold Mine. Expanded mesh now covers the 180 meter deep shaft dug by the gold rush miners. Gravel walking paths wind there way in and around diggings and other items of interest (art works). Further along the road you can find access roads leading to the crown land which is the hill overlooking Wattel Flat. Information boards provide locations of mines, walking tracks and 4WD tracks within the area. Public toilets and covered picnic tables are provided at different locations throughout the area. If you are interested in gold rush history you would spend the best part of a day walking around to see every thing that there is to see here. Gold is still found here on the odd occasion by those that like metal detecting.
