About the Business
Cooktown Powder Magazine | Australian Museums and Galleries | The Cooktown Powder Magazine was built in 1873-76 to store gunpowder destined for use on the Palmer goldfields. It stands at the far end of what was once the busy port of Cooktown well away from habitation. It has been in a ruinous state for many years but is now protected by a new roof and cyclone bracing.

Visited here way back in April 2004 on our 4x4 groups trip up to the cape. Not that much to see here but worth the walk from town. Please don't do like a member of our group and wee on this monument when he thought that we were not watching. Shame shame shame.
