Derby Tunnel
Fantastic tunnel and lit up in most places! Long tunnel and I think a torch be handy to see the path as some lighting wasn’t working but it was a great experience! Worth going to if u have the chance

Warning: Please do not go this tunnel if you are a pedestrian without bike riding. This tunnel is a part of mountain bike track and many mountain bikers go through it. Some cyclists are really rude and never reduce the speed or click the bicycle bell as alarm in the tunnel . The tunnel is very narrow with very wet and slippery ground. It is definitely not an attraction for pedestrian.

With any visit to an old mining town listening to old stories of how things come to be opens the door for small adventures. The Derby Tunnel came to be because a landowner wouldn’t let the miner over his land (hill) so he dug through the hill instead. Knowing his efforts shouldn’t go to waste a visit to experience his work was necessary.A small car park allows us to walk a short distance to the tunnel entrance who’s darkness does not look so inviting, but alas l brought a torch only to find sensor lights help illuminate the tunnel.A strange noise begins which encourages us to hug the walls as mountain bikes wiz past.Footwear that doesn’t mind moisture is recommended as the floor of the tunnel is wet.The blue ambience of the lighting toward the exit is a soothing experience and encourages a photo or two.The tunnel ceiling is quite low in places so unless you are short you will wish you were.4 to 4.5 stars as it is a great experience but beware of mountain bikes who can not see you till the last moment.

Nice little walking track to a cave like tunnel. You walk into the tunnel entrance and there is a sensor that activates the lights up the tunnel. Can do some really creative artwork with your camera in there.

Apparently this is a famous mountain biking trial. We walked. The information on google maps at the time wasn’t accurate and the bike trails didn’t display properly. I say this because as you imagine, hikers and bikers sometimes end up using the same trail. Also be prepared for some muddiness within the tunnel. Yet I still think this is worth stopping by if you are in the area.

I MTB in the tunnel then I also walked it with my wife.If biking keep you dropper down and do not stand up, its low. And also stay in the middle of the trail, very low lighting is provided and rocks stick out- so stay in the center! When walking it- bring a torch- it helps you see but also in case any riders come they can see you. When walking start from the Derby Tunnel Parking and follow the trails/signs. When you exit the tunnel you will have to use the bike trail, watch out for bikers coming behind you! Then you will come to a split in the trail- go right and up onto the dirt road you entered in on- you will have to walk on the dirt road back to the car- 5min walk or less. Total walking time would be about 20 min.

Very special experience, highly recommended,1. easy 5min single way walk, and you can’t do return because from the other side it says “single way only no entry” spend another 5-10 min to the car park,2. From the car park, there is a clear sign then do not walk the bike rail always remain on main wide road then you will found the entry( I write this because we didn’t found the entry at the beginning then we walk to the car park to walk another bike road then we still not find the entry, so we went back to the main road walk around 5-10 min to the entry) then at the other end side you have to walk the bike trail to the car park.3, totally you could spend 20-40min here depends on how fast you walk.

Beautifully maintained tunnel. Few puddles but nothing dangerous. Pitch black inside... take a torch.
