Not much of the old girl left now but it serves as a nice gathering spot for many marine species such as coral, turtles, sting rays, reef sharks and many types fish.

HMCS (later HMAS)[1] Protector was a large flat-iron gunboat commissioned and purchased by the South Australian government in 1884, for the purpose of defending the local coastline against possible attacks in the aftermath of the 'Russian scare', of the 1870s.[2] She arrived in Adelaide in September 1884 and subsequently served in the Boxer Rebellion, World War I and World War II.During July 1943, Protector was requisitioned for war service by the U.S. Army. On the way to New Guinea and off Gladstone, she was damaged in a collision with a tug and abandoned. The hull was subsequently taken to Heron Island off the Queensland coast and later sunk for use as a breakwater. Her rusting remains are still visible to this day.

Potentially the best snorkelling spot on Heron Island. The northern side provides protection for a great range of fish, coral and (the most I've ever seen in one spot) turtles resting. With this quantity you only ever have to wait a few minutes for one to swim up to the surface for fresh air. It was a great chance to get close to these wonderful creatures without encroaching on their space!

Best snorkel location on the island, so much marine life within a short swim, around 10 minutes. Please go before 8am and 5:30pm for safety reasons because this is a boat channel. Best time to go is 2 hour before and after high tide.
