Ayam Penyet Ria
Even if you don't agree with pricing, which arguably is slightly on the higher side (maybe), you will never say the food is not delicious. We had the gado gado, ayam penyet set, and ayam bakar. The chicken dishes were packed with flavour, the sambal chilli provided adds to the experience, and I'd happily go back for another meal. The gado gado falls in the it's OK category. Flavour is not bad, too many crackers on top at the start and you can't really tell what's under and what you're eating. But it is ok.

Tucked away amongst a bevvy is Vietnamese restaurants is this Indonesian gem. I can't fault the food or authentic Indonesian flavours. Things have changed since my original review in November '22. The restaurant has adopted a new menu which delivers better value for money. Rice is now included with most of the main meals and no longer charged separate. The menu is colourful and has great pictures of what is on offer and I'm pleased to advise the presentation of my meal matched the picture. The food is not the usual Dutch style Indonesian I grew up with and, based on hints in the food descriptions, I believe it might be Balinese style. I have an Indonesian friend from Jakarta who was not impressed but I'd suggest she had preconceived ideas of what to expect. Go in with an open mind and enjoy the complex flavours for what they are. The food is mighty good with just the right levels of spiciness and not dumbed down. Considering its location in Preston, it remains quite surprising and novel to find a robot 'waiter' delivering the food to your table.

Tasty food, nice restaurant but room for improvement.Their Ayam Penyet was cooked well and tasty. However, the chicken was a little small for a $12 price tag. Rice was not part of the price, and was also quite expensive I feel at $5+. There should be a set price at least which should land at about $15-$16.The Udang Penyet was pretty good too. The portion was quite good for that, 5 large prawns. The prawns were deveined and cooked to perfection. Excellent. The Soto Ayam was average. It was rather salty. We were reaching for the water after our meal so that was a giveaway. Also the portion was quite small, should be slightly bigger.Lastly, the Bandung was nice, though it could be slightly less sweet and definitely cheaper. $5.95 for a syrup drink is certainly too much. It’s more of a $3.50 price point. All in all it was good, but certainly should improve, especially their price points. Also, paying through Liven is accepted but there were no signs that indicated there. Heard it from another customer. Could have saved us a couple of dollars.Covid safe: Not everyone’s Vax Certs we’re checked, though it was indicated that it was a requirement of entry.

Came here for dinner since we always crave for Indonesian food. The ayam penyet is spot on and the sambal just compliments everything with the right amount of spiciness. The satay is not the usual satay, but we loved it. Ayam bakar is also recommended. Service is good. Still getting into the idea that a robot delivers your food. The only downside is if you have a baby, there’s no change room. Ended up changing the diapers in the car!Overall a 7/10. Will be back.

Great flavours in a casual atmosphere. Loved the well balanced dishes; faves were the Soto ayam (tumeric chicken soup), iga bakar (charred beef ribs), Tahu tempeh (crispy tofu and tempeh- my vegan partner said was the best he's ever had!) and the chicken satay. Food came out quickly and was reasonably priced- will return.

Chilli is great and spicy. Rendang is well marinated. Chicken bakar is nice too. Mee soto is great when u mix the chilli in.

Ayam Penyet Ria
We walked past another time and saw many Indonesian diners, so came back to try for ourselves. We started with the Sate Ayam (chicken satay) with a soy marinate and crunchy peanut sauce. The signature Ayam Penyet (fried chicken) had wonderfully crispy, spiced crumbs that were addictive in their own right. The Iga Bakar (grilled beef ribs) was covered in a sweet soy glaze, pleasing the taste buds with its sweet and savoury pairing but a bit overcooked for my liking, making it a chewing exercise. The Cendol was edible but not memorable.Food was ordered via QR code and delivered by a robot, so human interaction was minimal. On a public holiday there were few people, so the place was really quiet. The rating considers Melbourne's competitive gastronomic scene and this was a relatively average experience.

If you want the most authentic and delicious Indonesian food in Melbourne, you will be doing yourself a favour by going here. I have tried for years now, and I mean yeeaaaars, trying to find the most authentic rendang curry that was reminiscent of one I adored in Padang, and I finally found it. I don’t know if I will go anywhere else after this!
