We were there early January 2021. Had the place pretty much to ourselves. Great free camp spot, dog friendly. Thoroughly enjoyed swimming in the river!

Beware of weather, came for races 2022 and had a fair bit of rain. Camp on high spot by road. Tracks become very muddy and pools of water. Needed gum boots. First day races postponed to Sat and Sunday. Toilets and showers were at the far top ( eastern end) only. Roads out of Birdsville closed in all directions so you had nowhere to go. Caravan books out in Jan.

really excellent place for a short stay, even has drinking water taps. just a minutes drive from the town.

We stopped here at this free camp for 3 nights after doing the Birdsville track. Lovely quiet area. Again a little bit of highway noise but you can hardly hear it. Lovely big open spaces with plenty of spots to camp on both sides of the river. You will need to be fully self contained or you can go into town which is a 5 minute drive and pay $5 at the Birdsville Tourist Park and have a hot shower in the new amenities block they have put up in town. Well worth it if you just want to unwind. Also there is a small airport so you may experience a bit of noise of the small planes going over.
