You just can't be a great city without a great bookshop. This is Cairns' Hatchards, Blackwell, Abbey's books. A shop staffed by people with a deep knowledge of books. Able to help you. It's just next to impossible to get this service today anywhere in the world but here it is in Cairns. So treasure and support it.

Love, love this bookstore. Set out is spacious and you can happily page through books without anyone approaching you asking if they can help. It is in Cairns Central, on the top level near Myers. You kind of get lost in the books here. Diverse range including poetry, humour, picture books, manga and Michael Leunig. For me, you can basically rate a bookstore on the range of Michael Leunig books it stocks. My purchase? Perpetual Disappointments Diary. I love it- really appeals to my sense of humour. If you are a book lover, it is definitely worth a visit.

Great bookstore, found a book I couldn’t find in any other stores, staff friendly,,, don’t bother with the so-called ‘discount’ bookstores as they don’t have the variety and are the same price anyway

I felt awkward because I spent 20 minutes in there alone, then walked out without buying anything. The store is not busy at all, but I could spend all day in there. I went to qbd, which was busy, then headed over to cairns books, and there was not a single person in there, so I thought “They mustn’t have good books” but I went in there anyway, and they have all the same books as QBD + more! And another thing, the store smells AMAZING! It’s the smell of fresh books, and it made me feel so comfortable. So underrated! Though, the staff didn’t even glance at me, most would expect them to at least say hello, let alone look at me.

I like the experience of shopping in a bookshop over buying online for the most part; in particular, for the thrill of finding something. 'New book' bookshops tend not to cater to this feeling, I guess due to the economics of running one and due the prevalence of chain stores, and so usually I prefer second hand bookshops, but Cairns Books did the trick, twice in the one holiday. Reasonable prices and service.

They were so friendly and helped me by posting a book I needed at the last minute. They did it the same day so it arrived in time for Christmas as I was stuck on the Tablelands and couldn’t get to the store. They went above and beyond for me when other bookshops wouldn’t help. I now have a present to give my mum on Christmas Day and they have shown some rare kindness in a chaotic world.

Such an excellent little shop. SO MANY hard to find, Australian titles and titles as well as warm, local service. Val even kept the shop open while I drove in from the beaches for a birthday present on a Thursday night.
