Shack 14 — Flophouse | Chewton is now a small town but, from 1851 was part of the goldfields bonanza. The house is situated in bushland near the Goldfields Track, and connected to extensive walking/riding trails. Shack 14 is an architect-designed eco retreat on 10 acres, surrounded by bush, but only an eight minute drive to Castlemaine and five minutes to Chewton. Architect Ken Latona has created an open, tent-like dwelling that helps guests to connect with nature, themselves, and each other. Perfect for couples, close friends or families. Not suitable for pets, due to the bushland setting. Hotel bed linen and towels provided

We had the most beautiful stay at Shack 14. When we arrived the wood heater was already burning and the shack was so warm and inviting. It’s so lovely and peaceful. Everything was clean and comfortable. We enjoyed exploring the Chewton/Castlemaine area but were always looking forward to getting back to the shack to relax in front of the fire. It’s such a wonderful place to stay and we will definitely be back.

Fantastic getaway, secluded bush oasis.Unreal building, lux bedrooms, and a well stocked kitchen that allowed us to be self sufficient.Just a couple of suggestions - it was a steep and washed gravel driveway in - something to maybe mention incase guests come in a hatchback or something low to the ground!And a couple of extra outdoor chairs to cater for the 4 all 4 guests. It’s too good to not sit on the deck there!It was the perfect getaway though and we’ll recommend and return.

If you want to escape the rat race, this is the best venue within a stones throw of Melbourne. The building melts into the surrounding landscape and offers the perfect mix of form and function. The only neighbours within earshot are the local mob of grey kangaroos and a few kookaburras.We stayed the week and took in the local historical sites, lookouts and amazing produce. But you could just as easily stay the weekend and soak it all in.

The 4 of us were rejuvenated by nature after staying at shack 14. Despite the mid-week stay with less restaurants options, we ended spending every dusk greeted by the kangaroo, cooking and sipping cider by the fire. A perfect compact yet luxuriously self-equipped shack! To keep the eco shack warm through the night and wake up to some degree of warmth, our only suggestion would be to provide sufficient amount of fire wood for high winter. We definitely recommend!
