Freshwater bird hide
Absolutely stellar. This place needs to be known amongst Townsville for sure.

Freshwater bird hide
An interesting place but very bunker like. A better kind of viewing point would be a tower. A tower affords a much more relevant understanding of the area and would catch the ocean breeze. The other problem with bunkers is they can become quite messy very quickly and attract unwanted animals, not to mention mosquitoes. The council rangers SHUT the road to Shelly beach carpark where the road splits to the bird hide. town common was a good place to take much older people and young people unable to walk the distance to The windswept wide open plains of town common ( that were accessible to tourists cars until maybe a few years ago).I think that despite council rangers shutting this place that in the future that town common will return to being properly accessible AND will have something like shaded bird viewing towers so more more comprehensive views can be obtained. In the future people will return to park their cars at the back of Shelley beach and enjoy the beach. Shutting car access to town common was just putting another nail into the tourist economy of Townsville
