Can’t recommend Location enough, definitely the best option in Perth to hire stills gear. They have a large range of scrims/frames, and endless options in lenses, lights and tech. Mike and his team always go the extra mile to make sure you’ve got the best setup. Gear is always in perfect condition and the guys are always on call if there are ever any issues.

Location Equipment
The first time I strode into the gated storefront of Location Equipment, I was greeted by the warm, Fozzie Bear smile of Mike Knight and the familiar aroma of Nashua tapes & Starburst lollies - which are a permanent fixture on their front counter. I stood for a moment, idly watching a loop tape of local work, noticing my friend’s name had been misspelled and buying myself time to drum up the confidence I needed to finally ask the question. I had intended to meet with Mike to discuss the equipment I would require for the film I was making, but instantly I was struck by the twinkle in his eye that seemed to light up when I mentioned I was “going to be making a film.” Mid-way through explaining my film, he rubbed his hands together as if conjuring a spell and shouted at the top of his lungs, “You’re already in the movie, mate!” Initially I was taken aback. My body told me to run, but my toes were stuck to the T-marks that Mike had casually tossed at my feet. He let out a quiet chuckle, as if we were hushed inside a library. It was at this point in time, when I glanced over my shoulder to notice the window nearby had a camera pointed directly at me and that there was a soundie in the room, swinging a shotgun microphone vigorously back-and-forth above my head, capturing every word Mike and I were saying. “We’re gonna make you a star.” He exclaimed with more confidence than I could ever muster. I forgot everything I was going to ask. I stuttered, I had buzzed it, but Mike started prompting me with lines that made me feel like I knew what I was doing. I was scared when there was an eruption of smoke beneath the door without explanation, but Mike calmed my nerves by taking my hands into his own warm palms as he whispered into my ear, “You’ve got this.” Repeatedly, again and again as if a prayer, chant or blessing. As his voice drifted into a deep, bass mutter, Mike had, again, put me at ease. For he was right. I did have this… I sniffed the smoke-filled air and laughed at the familiar smell of a Rosco glycol solution that coated my lungs like a pre-teen at a PCYC disco. I was ready to move, I was ready to be a star. Mike pumped up the sound on the loop tape and I felt the urge to dance. He spun me around and when I stopped he abruptly asked me to do that again so he could get it from another angle. The camera operator leapt into action, swinging lenses while I dizzily spun around on my mark. I spun so much it made me feel sick. I started to regret the third full cream coffee of the day. But Mike knew all of this. He had the experience and the expertise to steady me whenever I felt like I was going to throw up. And finally, sweat dripping on all our faces, we smiled at each other as Mike yelled, “CUT!” And, “Print it!” I left the building alone and was instantly blinded by the piercing light of the West Australian sun. I had been so used to the darkness behind their tinted doors that I didn’t even notice it was still early morning. I stumbled back into my car and sat behind the wheel processing everything that had just happened. I steadied myself and caught my breath. For Mike was right. I did have this in me. This was the most exhilarating experience I’ve ever had picking up equipment and would highly recommend Location Equipment for those who are wanting to realise they’ve got a dance in them all along.
