Northern Rivers Rail Trail - The Tweed section (24 km)
Very easy to give the Tweed section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail 5 stars. We enjoyed everything about this trail. The surface varies from smooth tarmac to gravel, but would be suitable for all bike types (except maybe dedicated road bikes), and for all levels of experience. Very eBike friendly, with hire bikes available at Murwilumbah Bikes. Plenty of things to see along the way and many places to stop either on the trail or a short ride off. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful. Be aware, that the trail is already very popular. Some of the cafes/ pubs were very busy at lunch times. Also the Murwillumbah carpark at the start is already very busy, however it is possible to park along Railway Street opposite the trail head. Also, horse riders use a short section so care required when passing. We definitely plan to do this ride again.

It's a very nice ride, plenty to see(an eat) along the way. The long tunnel was unexpected but enjoyed it. Light recommended. It was good to see lots of people on trail. From young family's to the older retirees.

Just a gorgeous local nature trail, you can ride the full trail and back in a few hours with a moderate degree of fitness. I've done it 3 times now. Other riders are very friendly. Some walkers can be quite rude taking advantage of their right of way and won't move to the side if you politely ring your bell so you can pass. Great picnic spot & rest stop at Burringbar with public bathrooms and excellent local stores you can grab a coffee, ice cream, snacks or nice food. Bring a light for the awesome Burringbar tunnel, take it easy in there as there are walkers with no lights and could be a bit of a crash hazard. The tunnel breeze will cool you down. Definitely wear your helmet on the trail to protect your head from bush Ticks too. AAA+

If you love riding or walking, then you gotta do this. There is plenty of parking on arrival at Murwillumbah station. Unloaded the bikes, and off we went. We did a round trip to Burangda Station, so 37kms on normal bikes, and we are 56 and 61. Just took our time taking in the sights, stopping for pictures. Our average speed was 14kph. Heading out is harder (not that it's hard) than coming back. There's shallow inclines for a few ks but quite rideable. Probably considered busy today being a Sunday but not excessively in my opinion. You definitely need a good torch for the tunnel. My headlamp was useless. Hubby had the big torch to guide the way. Watch out for walkers in the tunnel too. You really can't see anything until your on top of people.Congratulations Tweed Shire on this fabulous trail. Will be back.

A fantastic experience running & riding the Northern rivers rail trail from Murwillumbah to Crabbes creek. Just a tick over 24km each way. The trail climbs approximately 180m up to the Burringbar tunnel, which is very dark & 520m long, so you need a good light to see the way. The only negative was many people not wearing helmets on bikes & one young idiot on a very powerful e-scooter doing about 50km p/hr past walkers & cyclists.

I’d give the Northern Rivers Rail Trail a 6 if l could, it was that good! Easy to ride, about 20% bitumen and the rest packed shale. You don’t need a mountain bike for this rail trail. A lot of families out riding it which was wonderful to see. The bridges are beautifully built and many cafes along the way, Moobal was the one l liked the most. Give it a go, you won’t regret it, you’ll have lots of fun!
