Interesting bit of history just outside Omeo. Easy, though undulating walk.

Only visited here for a short stop at end of day, and couldn't do the walks as we had our dogs with us. The place was well signed with a great information shelter at car park. Would love to return here another time as the photos I've seen on other reviews look really interesting.Entry road to the car park is a unsealed dirt road but was easy to manage even in a sedan.

This is a good place to take both walks from the carpark. The Oriental claims walk takes you around the claims sites with seats positioned around if you want a rest. Dogs are allowed on leashes which is great. The 2nd walks option is longer and takes you to a look out after walking through the mining area. There are some black Wallabies living in the area which are nice to see in the wild.

Nice picnic spot. Google map misleads in the sense that it tells you to walk over the hill where there is no path. It does take you to the correct turn off. Drive to the end of dirt road to see proper car park. Then the walks are sign posted you can not miss them.

I stayed at Omeo during Winter to have a Ride with Howling Huskies at Dinner Plain on a Snow Sled, Great Experience, Highly Recommend. Before going home we visited this Historic Site, this is the main reason Omeo Township Exists, centre of Major Gold Rush in 1860’s, people came from all over the World to try their luck here, Omeo was at one stage the wealthiest Town in all of Gippsland with a population of 10,000 in early 1900’s, the Golden Age Motel & Hotel in Omeo, was a Major Tourist Attraction for all of Victoria, when it was 3 stories, before being burnt down for the 6th time. Rebuild as replica of structure of previous 2 stories as at present. The Gold Mines are fascinating, in 1800’s they used water pressure from 45km of water channeling to wash clay hills away to find GOLD, this technique was banned in 1900’s, due to the Destruction & Pollution of Water Streams, even soiling the local rivers, eventually even the Murray River. These hills washed away can still be scene as your walk a half hr. trail.
