Mount Barker Fodder Store

The “treatment” of the live animals in their store is deplorable at best. Broken cages, far too many animals in cages too small for one let alone half a dozen. Can see RSPCA has been called previously and I have called again today.

This is a large store, run by friendly and helpful staff. You can buy gorgeous guinea pigs, beautiful bunnies, cheeky chooks, and a variety of birds, with all their food requirements to keep them happy and healthy. Also, a good place to get your dog food, horse food, bird seed etc. The list goes on. Oh and don't worry about the three pink pigs by the front entrance - they won't bite. Check them out.

On my first visit to this store on the weekend, I was shocked and appalled by the extremely tight conditions the animals were living in. Of most concern, 3 rabbits were in a small cage huddled together… one was DEAD! I politely told the gentleman who removed the stiff little body (it was in full rigor) while saying, “it wasn’t dead just before when I cleaned the cage”. It was very very disappointing and I will be reporting what I saw to the RSPCA. Sadly, I will never shop here again as I can not in good conscience support this business.

If I could rate this place zero stars I would have. If the ratings went into minus numbers, I'd have done that. We've always bought our hay, pellets and litter from here but NEVER AGAIN. For the first time we had a look at their animals while we went in today and all their birds are in small cages, all their bunnies are in small cages (except for one cage) and there's minimal food. The most distressing part was us alerting a staff member after realising a bunny was caught in a crack on the floor. We stuck around long enough to make sure the employee set the bunny free from the damaged tray and then I became extremely distressed when that bunny attempted to limp away on three legs with its fourth leg visibly badly broken. Will never ever ever set foot in here again and will tell everybody I know the same!

Worst service I’ve had in Adelaide. My partner and I have been trying to buy at least one chicken there about five times. The lady that works there always has an excuse, saying she can’t sell us any chickens. Either they’re “too young” or they’re “maybe” sold? She is very rude. I feel sorry for the animals that are in poor conditions and unsafe environments. I also feel sorry for whoever works for this horrible lady.

Go every week. Staff are great, friendly and helpful. Love and look forward to having pats with Biscuit the cat while my hubby plays with Charlie the cocky. They have a good range and reasonable prices.

Attempted twice now to buy chickens and women in store was quite rude, tried selling me ISA browns when I wanted a varied selection, told me all other breeds were either unsexed, too young or already sold. When I asked when the young ones were ready was accused of only wanting pretty chickens, not sure why that’s a bad thing? So went elsewhere and bought from a Breeder Couple Wyandotte’s and an Australorp. On adding to my flock went there again thinking maybe she had a bad day. This time couldn’t sell me anything as everything was either sold or not ready, put me on a wait list and told me it would probably be ISA Browns! Needless to say won’t be back. Just bought two more Wyandottes and a Barnevelder from breeders.

Animals require so much more than just food and water. This store has only provided their animals with the bare minimum, the food inadequate and water contaminated. Not to mention the small spaces that are assigned to them. At a glance, you can easily tell that they are seriously neglected. Please, to the store, if you are reading this, if you don't have the passion towards caring for these animals, I suggest not having a farm in the first place. Will be reporting to RSPCA again if the conditions do not improve.

The worst customer service I have ever experienced, would rather drive 30 minutes to another store than shop here. CANNOT RECOMMEND!!
