First time my family have been here in 5 years, reason being is food was just ok and it appeared most went for the salad bar etc.We came tonight with some friends who visit here every 2 to 4 weeks.We arrived at the start of dinner service to find the floors filthy smeared with chocolate cake and icing, chips and food crumbs.Also crumbs of cake and food on the table.When ordering, I was told there was no Apple juice for our daughter, however upon sitting down there were many on the other side of the bar.Some of the staff were amazing, others stuck up.5 pieces of bread and butter for 6 people, we had to ask twice for another piece.2 or so mistakes with our food.Yep, as suspected food still average and big wait (considering we were the first to order).When my friend asked for something he often gets for dessert he was told by the lady oh, I don't think we do them, as she pretended to look around, he said you did a few weeks ago when we last came, she said no we havnt done them for years.Shelves, cupboards and fridges all spare and bare looking, the place clearly hasn't had a good clean in months or years even, kids playground smelled dirty,Disused salad bar still in place to show you what you can't get any more, as is the formerly self serve iced cream machine which is no longer self serve.All in all, pretty average experience and a lot of laziness evident.unfortunate, so much wasted potential.

Myself and some friends have often had lunch in the Southern, but unfortunately the last 2 times we have been there the food was not up to standard. The chips were cold and tasted as if they had been warmed up not cooked fresh, the vegetables were cold and undercooked, the only thing hot on my plate was the fish. The first time the young lady was very apologetic and brought us more chips, the second time we could not be bothered as clearly the chef/cook was unable to deliver. the staff have always been very friendly and polite especially Nicole and Jessica and go out of their way to please the customers. Unfortunately it is the cook that lets this Hotel down. I have heard that you now have a new chef and a new menu, lets hope it is a big improvement.

The food was delicious. We ordered off the lunch menu and the portions were large and tasty. Staff were so friendly. Will definitely visit again.

We drive from Whyalla regularly to Gawler for medical reasons. We love to go to the Southern for a good meal the first day as we are tired after the drive. However this time the experience was terrible. When ordering the girl transposed the amount. We paid cash and she couldn't work out how much change to give. Waited 1 1/2 hours for our meals. Take away seemed to be priority. Ordered drinks and they had to go get more glasses. Everyone was running around so disorganised. Had to ask 3 times where our meal was. We arrived at 6.05 pm. Sorry we won't be back. Always loved coming to this hotel.

Hi went there on Saturday 27/05/2023Was very disappointed the service was not mentionableOne person taking orders and the same person serving drinksWe had 7 people at the table the soup was served as pumpkin when it in fact what was ordered Ginger & Carrot then the mains were slow coming the first came at 610 then the final one arrived at 630 service was not good the salads were something else to be served plain Jane stuff chips just warm I for one and my family will not be returning there are a lot better choices in GawlerWhy does the sister hotel have a salad bar / soup choices and desert table and the Southern has nothingI was not able to rate with no star as that option was not available in summary I wasted my money there tonight in excess off $250.00

Tasty and large value meals. Great kids play space and friendly service. This pub would be my go to in Gawler especially if you have young kids. Also kids meals are very generous.

Ordered first in our family group. Some had finished their meals some had started were but still waiting on entree. Asked where ours was. They hadn't even started cooking. Ok gave us a complimentary drink but eating after everyone has finished is not great. Food was nice but I would not go back again or recommend them. And please don't blame lack of staff. Someone wasn't checking how orders came in.

Great experience. We went on Schnitzel Wednesday where they had schnitzels for $14 before toppings. The schnitzel was big and was served with a good selection of mash and vegetables. The service was very friendly and quick. It was reasonably quiet being a Wednesday night with plenty of tables available. Toilets are good and clean. There is a big gaming area but you can't hear it in the dining room area. Nice decor in the hotel as well and a good size car park outside.

Dont know what went wrong today because they are usaly good but today all went wrong. Mixed up orders,cold food, one order was verry late and one not at all. When asked we wer told the chef had gone home. Verry disappointing

Great meal and great area kids loved the playground but staff behind bar need to acknowledge when customers are waiting for service for drinks
