Sanatorium Lake Picnic Ground

Beautiful tranquil area to walk in and a photographer's paradise

A good easy walk around a lake which used to be the only water source for tuberculosis patients recovering in the fresh mountain air. There's a small loop track which takes about 20 minutes. We went on a foggy Winter day and the feeling was very errie.

Great place. Lots of hiking spots that are easy and difficult that start here. The lake is very cool and lots of nice greenery to see. There’s quite a few picnic tables near the park and right next to the lake, it does seem to get busy during peak times

Nice and spacious so you didn't feel on top of others. Gorgeous trees. Quite and peaceful.

google allows reviews of a point on the map, but this is a review of a walk from this picnic ground to the Zig Zag Trail, then onto Hemphills Track. This is an easy walk, which, after winding down steeply, mostly follows the contour of the hillside. Every 200 metres or so, you will notice that the vegetation mix has shifted a little, then a lot, as the track makes its way along the ridges and creeklines on the west-face slope of Mount Macedon. I live locally, and a never tire of walking here. There's usually no-one around, it's safe, beautiful, easy to get to and won't cost you a cent.Park at the Sanatorium Lake Picnic Ground and walk down and back. A couple of hours, another hour somewhere to the side of the track lying on a rug with your picnic lunch, and you can return to the modern world happy in the knowledge that this older world is in good shape, and living out its life the way it has for millenia.

Lake is overrated...its pretty small and nothing extraordinary except for a bit of history related to TB patients..nonetheless the walk to the lake is absolutely stunning and a must go with dense lush greenery everywhere...35 mins drive from Melton and. It far fron Melbourne..serves as a good day of escape from city life...one con is unleashed dogs everywhere.
