A few years ago I had what can only be described as an exceptionally negative and unethical experience with Kids & Co. As part of the Dept of Justice's support for victims of extreme domestic violence, I was awarded 10 counselling sessions with a psychologist approved by The Department of Justice/Family & Community Services. Anna Cohen at Kids & Co and one other psychologist were the two options I was given in the Inner West. The Department of Justice pays the practice directly a standard amount for each session undertaken by the victim (in this case me). As both of my children were already attending weekly Kids and Co sessions (at a cost of $400 per week), it made sense that I attend their practice too. I was informed by an incredibly arrogant receptionist that although my children were already clients, and although she was duty bound and ethically bound to see me via her DOJ agreement (which she promoted on her website at the time), she couldn't see me as she was 'too busy', however she COULD for some reason fit me in as a private patient - at a cost of $395 per session (vs the $84.50 she would get from the Dept of Justice ). Keep in mind, Victim Support only offer free counselling sessions in cases of extreme domestic violence, so victims are desperate, fragile and often experiencing financial hardship. Also, she promoted this service on her website as something she was doing for the social good of the community (I note now this service isn't promoted by Kids & Co). Very sad, unethical, and greedy to the extreme, that those who were awarded this essential service are then not given it.

It may be different now but I took my eight year old to Kids and Co five years ago because the school suspected him of being on the autism spectrum. The psychologist was reluctant to pathologize him-which was a good sign, I felt, that she was able to put his best interests first-however there was in general a very money grabbing feel about the place with constant fee rises and pressure to do more sessions which continually reiterated our role as bearers of profits for the practice. When things went awry and DOCS became involved, Kids and Co went very cold-I was unable to even speak to the psychologist that both my son and had had sessions with but was told she had gone on leave and could not be contacted even indirectly. They refused to assist in any way at all-including merely writing a letter showing that I had attended the practice with my son and paid for his sessions for a year. Finally, they were compelled to comply with a subpoena and provided the scantest letter of record.Recently I needed some sort of evidence that my son had had difficulties with face to face education, to enrol my son in distance education. I asked if a letter summarising the concerns we presented with at the time could be sent to the relevant education officer- and the receptionist tried to book me in for a $300 plus 'assessment' instead-when pressed she told me in an officious and offensive tone that the records were private.Fair enough-but surely there is strategy for the education department to access parts of the records? Again, my impression that unless you are coughing up the bucks right then and there they are not only disinterested in helping you but actually verging on hostile, was confirmed.Interestingly, the office of Chris Wever, a very well known child psychiatrist and former head of Randwick Children's Hospital Psychology dept, had no such qualms and immediately agreed, in a friendly empathetic manner, to send me my 12 year old son's records at no cost. The two encounters, side by side, were a cogent demonstration of the difference of an operation that runs on corporate lines and that of an individual who takes it for granted that as human beings, he and his receptionist should try to come across as caring-rather than greedy.
