Mt Egerton Cemetery
Mt Egerton is on the land of Wadawurrung traditional owners. The first burial here was in 1855 not long after gold was discovered in the area. The hill overlooking the yard was a massive mining site. On the day I visited I met the secretary of the cemetery trust, who was weeding opposite the yard, and he told me all records were destroyed in a fire in 1900, so there are hundreds of unmarked and unknown burials in the yard. Because of that all new graves are placed up the hill, away from the original site.Parking is on the side of the dirt road out front. There are no facilities or drinking water, but there is shade and seating. The yard is fairly steep and uneven ground so would be challenging for people with limited mobility. There are some unique examples of monumental art here, not seen elsewhere. Plenty of historical graves remain and are well maintained and readable so you can get a sense of the history.
