Singing.Sydney - Simon Chalford Gilkes

Four years ago whilst a very novice ‘back row of the choir’ singer I was fortunate enough to be introduced to Simon, a hugely experienced, professional singing teacher whom I have since worked with on a weekly basis. Initially lessons were held ‘face to face’ , however during the pandemic, and now when convenient, lessons have been online.Throughout my time working with him, Simon has been hugely supportive, enthusiastic and sympathetic to my aims. My range has has markedly increased, my breath control has improved and my confidence has grown. Simon is, without doubt, the best singing teacher I have ever had and my lessons are the highlight of my week. I would recommend him without hesitation to anyone who wishes to improve their technique and/or their interpretation and presentation skills.

Simon holds a wealth of knowledge and experience both in technique and teaching etiquette. He provides you in a safe comforting space where you can make mistakes without judgement and grow into your voice and performance. He clearly has incredible musical and vocal knowledge which he happily imparts to his students.Can’t recommend him highly enough.

Simon is an incredibly patient teacher! If an approach didn’t seem to be working he was really great at figuring out different exercises to get the desired result. Most importantly for me though, the lessons were fun and free from judgement. I highly recommend working with Simon whether you’re a beginner student or someone looking to work hard on refining technique.

I've only been taking lessons with Simon for a few months, but I'm already feeling more confident in my singing. I've been singing with choirs for many years but never done any voice training or technical work, and Simon's been great at working out where my gaps are and giving me drills to help. He's also got a great teaching manner and explains things very well.

Simon is a great teacher. He's very knowledgeable, encouraging, and patient. The techniques and strategies he taught me really helped me to become a better singer, especially with my tone and support, so no more straining my voice to reach the notes. Although he has trained as an opera singer, he adapts his teaching to suit the style of music you like to sing.

Simon is a brilliant singing teacher with a wealth of experience that he is more than willing to share. He has an incredible understanding of how the voice works, and is able to explain and demonstrate in ways that are clear to beginners through to experienced singers. He is incredibly encouraging and positive, and is a delight to work with. I have noticed the improvement in my tone and ease of access to my upper register since learning from him.
