We've been coming here for takeaway since it opened, mostly out of convenience and the majority of the time the food is fine. It's not the most authentic or flavoursome Japanese, but for our local Japanese in our regional town it's fine. However, tonight and to be honest on other occasions, the service is just not good. I rarely know if my order has been taken correctly and it often is not - I now check it on pick up. But tonight the service was next level bad - I simply tried to pick up my phone order. Only to be greeted (if you can all it that) with a disinterested stare. The man then proceeded to look for my order by getting me to tell him the items I'd ordered (as they hadn't taken my name). While he was looking the phone rang twice and he proceeded to take the calls and process two additional orders while I was standing in front of him waiting for 10 minutes. He then hung up and literally coughed all over me, my daughter and the heater of food. Only when I told him 'i really have to go' did he process the transaction with no goodbye or thank you.Sorry king koi - but as a local who came here fortnightly, I just can't condone this level of service and sadly, don't think I can return. Coming into winter, in a tourist town where the population is slashed during the cold weather, you should consider treating your regulars with more respect and kindness.

The service is the only thing stopping this place from being a great spot. I have only been here for lunch, but the food is usually very good and well-prepared with great range. The service, however, is abysmal. I'm not sure if it's due to a language barrier with some staff members or a lack of interest - but every single time I have visited this place the experience and great food has been marred by awful service. The front of house workers I have experienced regularly neglect you, and you have to make an active effort to be seated and to order. They regularly will mess up your order, even if you politely repeat and clarify yourself (and if they are confused they won't care to ask for clarification). Simply, the process of ordering here is needlessly difficult. I would encourage the owners to make an effort to improve their service and front of house staff's attentiveness, as despite enjoying the food, the service is the constant thing that prevents me from regularly returning.

We’ve been here quite a few times (takeaway orders including delivery about 7x times and dine in twice) and have been really impressed with the quality- fresh, well prepared and not overly sauced so that the flavours of the vegetables and seafood come through. It’s our go to takeaway place now and we’ve never been disappointed. We’ve dined there a couple of times and of course it’s even more delicious as it’s slightly fresher than when you take it home. Also think it’s reasonably priced and we enjoy supporting this local business. Favourite local. We usually get rice dishes or bento boxes, and entrees but just started on their noodle stir fries and weren’t disappointed either.

I’d have probably gone for 3 stars, but I went for 2, because of this being marketed as Japanese food. The food certainly tasted okay, but the flavours and choice of ingredients were definitely not Japanese. Asian in some form, yes, but Japanese, no.We lived in Japan for 3 years and we regularly eat Japanese food around Victoria, so the flavours are familiar to us.I had chashu ramen (as did 2 others in my group). The broth was not typical of ramen, and the vegetables in it (although nice and fresh) were raw button mushrooms, steamed broccoli and shaved raw carrot. The egg, rather than a ramen egg, was poached, though not fully cooked (the white was still clear in places - maybe a raw egg was just cracked into the hot soup, I’m not sure). The pork was tasty, but again, was not authentic Japanese in flavour; it was cut quite thick for ramen and the flavours (though nice) were more Chinese than Japanese. So, while the meals tasted okay, it just wasn’t the reason we went there. We wanted Japanese, but it wasn’t really.I can’t speak for the sushi, as none of us had that, but my husband had a chicken katsu don and had the same experience as me.

Started with deliciously fresh sashimi and fried tofu followed by the Deluxe Bento box and Unagi don and weren’t disappointed. We will definitely be back.

The food was really bad, by any measure. Just a big, soggy, tasteless mess. And the prices were astronomical.Update: and both my kids just threw up all the noodles they ate in their beds. Thanks for the food poisoning guys.

This is a nice Asian restaurant on the main street. It is a bit out of the way up a flight of stairs, but it is worth the trip up.I didn't book a restaurant and that was a huge mistake as everyone was out in town that evening and luckily this place was not booked out.We ordered 2 rice bowls, or dons. They were really generous with the portions and that filled us up real good.In terms of the flavours the stir fry Japanese curry Don was not what I expected since my understanding or Japanese curry was a dish with potatoes and carrots and meat, but this one is unique. No potatoes! I think that is am interesting deviation from norm and certainly it did taste good.Miso soup was hot and I enjoyed it as the evenings were getting cold there. It's a good place for a bowl of rice and some toppings, and the other dishes looked good but we didn't have the chance to try.

The food was quite good, but perhaps a little expensive. They also needed to change the oil in the fryer. I smelled it when I walked in and could taste it in the food.
