Tooway lake has been a swimming lake since forever. The sandbar usually builds up and keeps it closed to the ocean so it can get a bit murky. If that puts you off Curimundi lake is a much better bet. People mostly use the end down at the beach. Very popular with families with little kids and dogs (4pm to 8am) especially when the surf is up or stingers are around. Pretty spectacular when the lake breaks through, especially during heavy rain. A pet peeve of mine is folks “helping” the lake break through. We have lost a whole bunch of mature trees on the North bank as a result and council had to bring in diggers and rebuild the path. The lake tends to break through to the south side and in times past sometimes established a much bigger lagoon in front of the park. This never really gets a chance to get going anymore. If you really have to “help” the lake break out I think the remaining trees would appreciate you doing it more on the south side!Part of the issue the lake has is that the new bridge (that replaced the old WW2 army bridge) narrowed the lake even further. It’s really a causeway with a very narrow bridge that’s a fraction of the width of the lake. A lot of mud and sediment slowly building up on the Upstream side of the bridge.One minor thing to be aware of, a long time ago the sewage plant dumped into the creek. That’s been stopped for a long time and a lot of the sediment was dug out. However, there is an emergency overflow for the local sewer system near the bridge. It only flows once in a blue moon but when it is running definitely look for somewhere else to swim or fish!
