If privacy, peacefulness and abundant wildlife is your thing - then this is the place for you!Situated mid way between Pennishaw (ferry) and Kingscote (biggest town and airport) the location is excellent for all visitors with their own transport. It is also close to American River a small and friendly town with an Oyster farm :-), basic provisions and excellent bird watching opportunities. The rooms are fully self-contained and surrounded by a wrap-around verandah. John, the host, keeps the bird baths full of water, so you can finish a days sightseeing with a relaxing sit on the verandah watching the local birds visit the birdbath. You'll also hear/see koalas. The local kangaroos and always around and easy to photograph. Keep an eye out for the blond-tipped echidnas and enjoy a visit from the local goannas. You'll need a few days minimum to explore the island, but I'd recommend a week, if you can spare the time.

Where to begin. Thanks - Thanks to John and Karon for being the most amazing hosts you could ask for when travelling. My partner and I visited Kangaroo Island in January and booked around end of November. We were quite fortunate to find this accommodation, as something like 80% of Kangaroo Island had been booked. How lucky we were! You drive up a very bumpy road to wide open fields (don't be worried when you are driving up the road - you will make it!). We were given a nice run down of things to do on the island, places we could eat at and closest town(s) to visit. The beds are extremely comfy and the self contained unit is cosy and good free WIFI for such a remote area. A nice breeze usually comes through and cools the house down on those hot days!In the evening, we were always visited by some Kangaroos, drinking from a strategically placed water bowl by John. We were also very fortunate to see an Echidna and Koala around the property (as well as hundreds of Kangaroos). On the last night, John so kindly showed us the most beautiful sunset and a perfect way to wrap up a holiday. Cannot recommend this place enough!

Beautiful and quiet guest house / farm stay. John and Karon were amazing hosts and made our stay here memorable. Thanks for the 4WD tour to see kangaroos and wallabies and the tip for where to watch the sunset.

We stayed 3 nights in this magical place. The owner was extremely nice and provided us a lot of useful information about the island, the animals and about the places which we should visit. The room was very very very clean, nice and cozy, comfortable bed, well equipped kitchen, basically we had everything that we needed in the room including a backyard where we could sit and just watch the magnificent view.In the property itself we saw tons of kangaroos, they just jumping near the house it was really fun to see them in the wild, and the feeling was that all the kangaroos of the island consantrated there.Basically we had great experience and I am so happy that we chose to stay at Flour cask.

We stayed at Flour Cask Bay Retreat for 3 nights in January 2021 and had a great time! John is very knowledgeable of the local wildlife & we felt very comfortable throughout our stay. We were able to cook up a BBQ, saw kangaroos every morning & evening and listened to a flurry of bird-life each morning. Bee hives are a short walk and the property and garden have been very well maintained. 5 stars & thanks again for a great experience :)
