Shepherds Lookout
Iconic sunset spot. You simply get lost in between the rivers and mountains, reflected by the amazing sunset. It is a shame to have all those power stations near by though.

A short walk from the road gives you great views of the Molonglo River. The path is paved about 90% of the way, and it is easy to walk even in the dark after sunset.

One of the great bonuses of living in Australia's Bush Capital is............well just that really, the Capital really does have a lot of bush. And it is both close and very accessible within Canberra/ACT itself. So before I launch into this review it's important to note that despite Australia doing very well in regard to it's COVID-19 response and management, there are still a lot of interstate travel restrictions and/quarantine requirements still in place (but hopefully lifting soon). This of course is curbing our travel lust a little bit.As a result I suspect we are all (my fellow Aussies) beginning to investigate, rediscover and delve into our own backyards and local areas. And Shepherd's Lookout is quite a nice, and easily accessible location for Canberra locals. It's essentially just a short hop away from one of Canberra's North Western suburbs of Holt. The access road to the car park is sealed and in good condition. But be aware that there are a limited number of car spaces available, although parallel roadside parking was possible for a few additional vehicles. We did not undertake the full walk and only went to the Shepherd's Lookout viewing platform. The track down the slope from the car park was a mild gradient and would require only an average level of fitness to walk. At a slow pace it took about 10 minutes to walk the downhill sloping track to the lookout platform.Once at the lookout we were rewarded with a relatively unobstructed and panoramic view of the meandering Murrumbidgee River down below, a picturesque rocky outcrop and meandering hills off to the right. Off to the left were the Brindabella Ranges in the distance. We were fortunate to witness some kayaker's slowly pass by on the river below as they headed toward their destination downstream. While Shepherd's Lookout may not rate as a must see destination. But it was definitely worth the drive and time out of our day to venture out to a lovely natural location with a picturesque view. Please note that the flies were VERY FRIENDLY during our visit. So do yourself a favour and bring personal insect repellent, a leafy twig or something to discourage the little winged devils from causing you to give a endless Aussie Salute". Or for those that don't understand that Aussie term

The views from the lookout over the Murrumbidgee River and Ngunnawal country are spectacular and it’s only a 15-minute walk from the car park to the lookout. The path is a combination of bitumen and gravel and is gently undulating. There are no steps so you could take a robust buggy all the way to the lookout but the lookout not accessible for wheelchair users. There’s a longer path you can take on the way back, which also intersects with a steep path that you can take down to the Uriarra picnic grounds (3.5km).This is a lovely little walk and my canine companion enjoyed it thoroughly (dogs permitted as long as they’re leashed).

Very nice walking along the river with beautiful views and look-out, but the trails covered too much bushes. It is a bit harder walking than a few years ago, as less people and a lot of rain recently.

Beautiful lookout point, 10-15 minutes of walking from the main road. The view was amazing.
