Buying land and building a house is a big deal, both emotionally and financially. I knew from my years in banking and property finance that things can and do go wrong, even with the best of care and intentions from the builder. So, I decided even before signing a contract with a mid tier 'reputable' builder that we would engage an external building inspector to provide initial and ongoing advice at each stage of our build to protect our interests. It's a no brainer. To my mind, fees are not a cost but a modest investment for peace of mind and professional advice and support at every step of the way.With a little searching I found Gordon Xue of Jim's Building Inspections. Gordon has the deep experience I was looking and is still practically involved in the industry in residential and commercial building so he's kept up to date with industry trends, materials, building techniques and code/ regulations.In both inspections to date, Gordon has identified multiple points requiring attention, rectification and, in one serious instance, the involvement of an external engineer to repair a substantive failure by a contractor. Had we not engaged Gordon we would have been completely ignorant of these items however minor or otherwise, and I'm quite uncertain as to whether our site supervisor would have had the time or able to give priority to address all the items reported.So, I have no hesitation in recommending Gordon to anyone interested in protecting their home/ investment and balancing the otherwise unequal relationship with their builder.

Gordon and his team were polite and prompt and seemed thorough in their inspection. Hope I don’t have to keep calling them out but I’m happy enough to leave them some kudos if that helps others.

If you are not a professional builder, I recommend experienced people like Gordon and Li do the hard work for you. You don't need to worry about anything. You invest so much money to build a house; you have nothing to lose by paying a few dollars for an inspection. Gordon is an amazing guy , does an in-depth analysis & provides a great in-depth report with attention to detail. When I say in-depth I mean WOWWWW every detail is covered of the house . His background of being in construction was priceless and helped me get so many quotes and things done without even getting people in to see while the owner still occupies the place. Great work highly recommended !

We decided to go with Gordon based on numerous recommendations and positive reviews for our knockdown rebuild project. We have just had Gordon and his team conduct a pre-slab site inspection and report and we have been very impressed with their responsiveness and attentiveness especially after giving them short notice to be available on site. Very professional team, the builder rescheduled at the last minute of the inspection and Gordon was still able to send his inspector. Two days later the report came and I was shocked to know the results. Have a lengthy discussion with the build supervisor citing the findings on the report.
