Like all professions, there are Business Coaches and Business Coaches. Distinguishing him from many others, Dr Steven Segal has, to borrow one of his own terms, the 'felt sense' of a Business Coach. This 'felt sense' enables Steven to deliver an uniquely enriched experience to 'coachees'. Steven's felt sense is innate and not acquired, it courses through him and is part of what he is. It projects as absolute attunement with his 'coachee' to the point where the 'coachee' is able to see an image of their own thoughts in Steven's reflective questioning.Business Coaching is about creating space for developmental reflective thinking to emerge in a conversation. Steven's skill of drawing our knowledge from us by reflective questioning is both illuminating and intoxicating. Intoxicating in the sense that reflection provides understanding which then fuels the quest for knowledge.In 2021 HARDI Australia engaged Steven to prepare and deliver a personal development programme for its Executive Management Team. The programme was to be oriented around Business Coaching. The Executive Team is comprised of academically and experientially trained individuals. Having witnessed those from practical backgrounds struggle with analytically based management education frameworks, I was eager to ensure that the programme engaged the entire team.It was pleasing to see the immediate engagement of our experientially trained managers. Those with traditional academic backgrounds took a little longer to adapt but once engaged, made rapid progress.In a conversation with one individual, I commented that for me, Steven shone a torch one step further than I was able to see naturally - bringing meaning from the darkness. This comment drew the response that for the other manager, Steven created darkness so as not to see what had been confining their thoughts. Observations of this nature illustrate a very deep connection between the Business Coach and coachee in a way that only a philosophical approach to reflective thinking can reveal.The objective for HARDI Australia was to harmonise the thinking of the Executive Team in order to deliver better strategic and tactical outcomes for the business. The ability to understand one's own experience within a strategic framework and apply this in a practical way adds considerably to alignment and execution within an Executive Team.Such was the success of Steven's Business Coaching, that we decided to role out a more general programme into middle management.I would be happy to expand on my comments if called upon to do so.
