A few years ago, the premises of my shop, Busy Bee Deli, was gutted by fire. However, with determination and encouragement from the community, I set my mind to get the business back on track.I needed an architect to design the new shop and prepare documentation for building approval on a tight timeframe. Our project involved converting a huge 230 sqm metal clad, introverted shed in the rear wing of our farmhouse in Merton, Victoria (about 150 km north-east of Melbourne), into a contemporary living space that would seamlessly integrate into the rest of the house.The house sits on a sprawling 25ha rural property and has elevated views over 8 paddocks, rolling down to a creek, with the ranges in the distance.We engaged Nalin Perera, architect of Designplex 21 Architects to undertake the design of our conversion. The project assigned to him was both architectural and interior design in scope.Nalin visited the site in 2021 and carried out initial site observations. He proposed we open out to the surroundings and bring that life into our new space. He detailed the design in collaboration with our family over the following months, until we were satisfied. We eventually arrived at a contemporary open plan living, dining and entertainment area plus an outdoor pool and barbeque deck that connects with the surrounds and enhances our family’s lifestyle. He suggested we retain certain structural elements of the original shed to convey a sense of memory. The exterior resonates with modern shed-homes of the region.The construction is currently in progress, and we are excited about occupying it once completed. Even though it was a few years ago that we had our extensions done to our house., i still am so very grateful to Nalin Perera for the tremendous work he did. His eye for detail and design was far beyond our expectations. I love sitting in my office looking out of the Windows onto my beautiful garden. We engaged Nalin to assist us in bringing our second round of renovations to life. Mr Perera of Designplex 21 Architects was initially appointed by us to design a concept for a presbytery (accommodation facility for resident priests), within the existing property of the church. His research of presbyteries in metropolitan Perth and his own architectural skills were valuable in arriving at a design that met the approval of the parish Finance Committee.However, the presbytery idea was shelved in favour of a drop-off facility which the parish considered a priority. We engaged Architect Nalin Perera of Designplex 21 Architects to design an ensuite extension to our residence and provide documentation leading to council approval.At the outset, Nalin painstakingly reviewed hand drawn, 50-year-old approval plans presented in imperial units, notably lacking in clarity. Then he set about the rather onerous process of converting the units and updating the documents to reflect the current state of the building – based on a physical building measure.The design was developed and communicated through several meetings between ourselves, to the mutual satisfaction of both architect and client.
