Wow...such a quiet and peaceful setting created out of the ruins of a catastrophic time in our worlds history.Make of it what you will, but it is definitely a drawing place for reflection and redirection for the moral compass. The truth may never be known, but as long as we can take a positive and constructive bearing from events such as this, then I truly believe the monument has served its purpose.May they all rest in peace, Amen.

On 28-29 April 1996, twenty-year-old Mark Bryant, a lone gunman armed with 3 semiautomatic weapons callously killed 20 people, mostly tourists but some Port Arthur staff, inside the Broad Arrow Cafe and 15 more in the nearby vicinity. He callously killed 35 and wounded some 20 people. In April 2000, the Port Arthur Memorial Garden was created here with a pond and a monument to commemorate those that lost their lives so tragically. Bryant pleaded guilty and is now serving 1035 years, without parole. His prison papers are marked, never to be released.

I think what I like most about this memorial is its subtlety, its reverence and the peaceful and reflective nature of it. You could easily spend a day at Port Arthur and miss it, I assume by design, but it is worth a look, to read the names of those lost and to see inside the shell of the cafe where it all happened. You leave with a deeper sadness than you arrive, that is for certain.

Such a peaceful garden and the shell of the cafe where Australia’s worst massacre took place in the year 2000. I couldn’t help but think about all the people that would have been eating at the restaurant when the shooting took place. Many of them tourists, never to return home. I liked the leaves in the water representing each person that died.

This is somewhere you can have a moment of quiet reflection. Nice to pay respects to those who lost their lives in this tragic event in Australian history. While it's horrible this happened, it's why Australia is now so safe for generations to come thanks to the gun laws we have here. It was a truly defining moment for Australia.

Memorial is nicely located close to the information centre. Next to it is the original cafe building where the shooting tool place

Last time I visited this place the Broad Arrow Cafe was still operating! Sad that only a shell of the place is left. Another somber and tranquil place in memory of those who perish here 25 years ago.
