I highly recommend getting a diet check analysis done for your dog, you will likely be surprised what it shows up. I thought that my beagles were on a very good diet which included raw egg yolk every 2nd day, tinned wild Alaskan red salmon, Salpet oil, cooked free range chicken and vegetables, raw chicken necks, the occasional bone, and an expensive commercial dry formulation which made up about 25% of their calorific intake. None the less, I was curious, and asked Racheal of Riverina K9 Services to do a diet analysis.While the beagles diet was adequate in terms of calories, it was low in calcium, several trace minerals, a couple of vitamins and one of the omega 3 fatty acids. I was horrified to learn that expensive commercial dog foods do not fully meet nutritional needs, and that they are way too high in carbohydrates for canines.Racheal’s 25 page report was a comprehensive science-based analysis, which also showed me how I could improve the beagle’s existing diet by a range of small modifications, plus the addition of suitable amounts and types of raw meaty bones (RMB). The latter reduced the amount of dry food needed, and more importantly, provides a great “recreational” experience several times a week. Furthermore, things didn’t just stop with the diet report. Racheal continues to provide quick turn around with helpful and informative answers to any questions and comments I email her. I am learning a lot.The beagles were doing well on their original diet, and there have been no issues as I improve on this (in fact, my nutrition is improving too!). This small investment now is a great investment for the future health and well-being of my girls, preparing their meals is more interesting for me, and no doubt they are enjoying a greater diversity of smell and taste sensations.
