If you're up for a short safe paddle with the kids, this is your best opportunity just ouside Lorne. The flow is very gentle due to the slow gradient along the valley. Only the lower 900m or so are easily accessible by kayak, due to fallen trees, shallow rocks and the narrow width of the stream. At the river mouth, the sand bar makes it too shallow at low tide, but you can get to the sea at high tide. Great for a 1hr-2hr paddle. Easy. Plenty of parking and ramp along the Great Ocean Rd. 10mins from central Lorne. No toilets though and the water in the river is not suitable for drinking. So, be prepared before you head out. Enjoy!
