I arrived in Port Douglas and saw a lovely estuary and piers for fishing and a boat rental for going up the estuary to fish and see crocs, for me as a wildlife entusiast and a fishing angler with about 20 years experience this seemed perfect especially when seeing the local tackle shop did a 24 hour rod and kit rental allowing 1 day of boat fishing and 1 from the shore and pier. Whilst the rods and reels where not great they looked like they could handle a decent fish at least a 10lb with care. I was told that the line was 20lb in strength which sounded great as I have pulled in in fish much heavier than my line on many occasions (wish I had checked the line but I let the excitement get the better of me). After renting the roads with my dad I bought some lures, baits and some bits of tackle I set off to take the boat up the river to do some fishing. We had a few small fish however we had two good sized fish give a quick run and snap the line, whilst this was disappointing we chalked it up to a snag or weak spot on the line we did not notice. The following day we had many good runs and 1 lenghty fight from the shoreline however all resulted in the line snapping sooner or later (generally in the first few seconds) even with the clutch set low. After chatting with local angler's I was informed by multiple people people that to catch any thing decent a wire trace is advised due to most of the fish having sharp teeth, whilst we are on the subject of teeth in the kit hire they provide things like hooks, weights and a knife however No pliers or discorger for removing the hooks from the fish1. This makes it unsafe to remove hooks from the fish if they have swallowed the hook,2. This causes pain and distress to the fish as you can't remove the hook without ripping it out so you need to cut the line and leave the fish with a hook in its throat. On the second day we fished from the shore and had many great runs but the fish would snap the line no mater what we did. When we expressed the disappointment when returning the gear a lad told us that in fact the line was only 12lb (whilst this is not 20lb it's a strength I am used to and from experience its pretty strong). During this time I began to point out to the lad that this could not be 12lb which seemed to amuse him, the older man (guessing the store owner) began testing the line strength and seemed surprised that he could snap it between his hands with zero effort to the point where even he was saying that it could not possibly be 12lb to which the lad still refuted (to put it in perspective for those not familiar with fishing if you try to break 12lb line with just your hands and no cloth is will be painful and can even cause bleeding in some cases, I suspect that the line is either so old that it's rotten or has degraded from being left in the sun). The whole attitude in the shop was very disappointing and its clear that when it comes to rod rentals it's just to make a quick buck of tourists no matter that the line is unfit for purposes and the lack of proper handling equipment means that they clearly have no regard for the safety of the customer or the care of the fish.It makes me sad to see shops like this as it puts off new anglers especially when parents take their kids for the first time fishing. My advice is bring your own rod and gear or don't use this shop and use the boat rentals rods as they appear to be in better Shap.

While in town thought we would like to do a bit of fishing.Visited this place to find that they offered a complete set for just $20 all day.Included was a a fully kitted rod, a stainless steel bucket, extra tackle, a knife, a chopping board, tide chart, fish species chart, best local fishing locations and best of all your choice of bait.Staff were very helpful.Found it the best and cheapest entertainment in Port Douglas.Excellent value.

30lb mono isn't what I call a light leader but hey, you recommend as the minimum you'd go for land based river, it withstood snag after snag including a few that pulled the hook straight. I managed to hook a coupla Manny J's though so all in all.. happy mofo!

Great disappointment. I would give zero stars if this was an option. My son and I hired rods, reels and line from this shop and also bought some lures. We explained that we were experienced anglers but we're on vacation without our usual gear.Whilst the rods and reels weren't big name brands they looked decent enough to do the job of some River and pier fishing. The young lad in the shop assurred us the reels had 20lb line.So we spent two days fishing and lost due to line breaking over 4 decent fish between us.On going back to the shop the young lad hurriedly told us the line was only 12lb.Whilst The older guy sat running the line though his hands and snapping it with ease again and again. And turned to the young lad telling him this wasn't even 12lb line. The younger guy started the bullsh*** of ohh that's what the reels come with.No refund was offered for what was obviously sub standard equipment / line. The reel problem was this line was wrotten probably as rods left out in sun and condition clearly not checked when returned. 12 and 20lb line can't be broken between hands. It will just cut you.I suspect it's the young lads job to check rental gear and clearly from his response he doesn't care.Worst is it ruined what could have been two very productive fishing days.Just had the feeling that to this shop we were tourist and not worth the effort of being honest or looking after the gear they are renting. After all chances are you won't be back anyway. So we learned the hard way, bring your own gear don't buy or rent here.Hope this helps someone else's holiday. Let's face it holidays aren't cheap.Disappointing response to negative feedback appears owner thinks what did you expect for a 20 dollar hire.Well I expected goods would be fit for purpose and not rotten or sub standard. The response is similar to what we had in shop. Effectively what do you expect your just a tourist.Response says more about owners than this review.
