White Cliff Opal Fields
Over an hour drive from Wilcannia NSW 2836, part of it is unsealed road. Two wheel drive is fine under good road/weather conditions.It's interesting to see opal mines, some of them are still operating. You can try to dig some opal yourself lol. Remember to bring some digging tools with you. It is very hot out there in summer.We were there at Christmas day. Stores and most tours are closed.

Nice place untill the government stepped in and started to close it down, with native title and the barkandji corporation wanting the land dugouts and millions of dollars, with one of the stations close to town (glen hope) is working with roy buttler to stop opal mining in an opal mining town, the dugout owners are left with not knowing what is going to happen, if a dugout is sold it must be offered to the barkandji first for the price set by them , even if I have spent 200k I will only get offered 50k for the dugout ,now with government corruption , opal mining has stopped after over 100 years , please send a letter to you local politicians for supporting an open opal field in whitecliffs nsw.

Very remote NSW outback mini town. Unsealed roads to opal fields. So many small dugout holes - be careful and watch out for your safety. Stunning landscapes from bird’s eye views, very unique! Worth the visit.
