Rockhampton Zoo
Great zoo. Got there in the morning during feeding time. So glad we did.Only need and hour or 2 there but the animals are very happy and there was plenty of staff around to answer questions

It’s a zoo, so there are animals in enclosures, although those enclosures are not dissimilar in size to the ones at Australia Zoo, so they seemed pretty reasonable. For a free zoo there were plenty of animals to see, including chimps, meerkats, otters, emus, kangaroos, koalas and crocodiles, amongst others. For those previous reviewers talking about how sad the animals are and that they shouldn’t be here, try reading the info by the cages or listening to the keepers talks: there’s a chimp who were rescued from a circus, a wedge-tailed eagle who was hit by a car and cannot be rehabilitated, a koala who can’t regulate its own body temperature so can’t be in the wild, turtles that were rescued from illegal home tanks…Overall, the zoo is definitely run down and needs a good working bee just to tidy it up. But the enclosures that are in use are in good condition and kept well for the animals in them.

This is a small zoo compared to what you'll find at Australia Zoo or capital city zoos but it's got a hidden treasure with the excellent chimpanzee enclosure. It's right by the excellent Rockhampton Botanical Gardens so you can easily make a day of a trip here with the kids. The zoo itself is free entry and I really recommend going to see the Chimpanzee talk which currently happens at 2:45pm. Many of the chimps have a sad story around how they got to the zoo but it's good to know they're now in a much better environment and there's some younger chimps that were born at the zoo.The zoo is quite small so you can see every enclosure at the zoo in under an hour. It's a delight to walk around in the mostly shaded zoo. We went on a Friday so it wasn't busy.As well as the chimps there's meerkats, otters, a wedge tailed eagle, a large male salt water croc, freshwater croc, kangaroos, emus, dingos, koalas, wombats and lots of birds including a big bird aviary enclosure. The zoo staff are really friendly and happy to answer questions.I really recommend leaving a gold coin donation to help the conservation efforts at the zoo and to support the awesome work if the zoo staff.

The first thing I must tell you is there are NO PUBLIC TOILETS. Very poor. Also there were many enclosures closed, very poor again considering this is school holiday time. What are managenent thinking? However I did enjoy the meerkats, monkeys and otters. It was a very clean venue, but overall, a bit disappointing.....

Date with husband day. Like it. Got to see baby chimp. Wish though it had more Animals from around the world. Love the meerkats and otters. Good for taking the kids to for them to see the wildlife. Gardens are beautiful and green but zoo is more for kids. Chimps and crocs are a must to see. Food is OK.

Some zoo's make you ooze with regret when you leave. Not this one. They are doing a great job at maintaining and upgrading enclosures for the animals. As well as ensuring the animals have enrichment such as branches/nest materials for the chimps which were having a ball when we arrived. I watched them probably for a good 20 minutes snuggling and roughing each other up, draping branches over thier shoulders and swinging and jumping on the various play equipment. Cannot believe this and the botanical Gardens are free. Having said that for those who can afford to I think it's worth jumping on the website and donating what you think would be fair to pay for entry.

Amazing little place. Gold coin donation inside the Rockhampton botanical gardens. Koalas, emus, kangaroos, chimpanzee, Macau, meerkats and very big wedgetail eagle. Great place to take the kids, easily accessible with ramps and just wander around, really enjoyed it as we passed by. #rockhamptonzoo #zoo #rockhampton #botanicgardens #gardens #free

A wonderful little zoo that is free. The animals all look healthy and happy. Nice grounds to stroll through. The botanical gardens are also lovely. Hopefully, the in-flight bird aviary will open again one day. A new playground is opening too, which will be a lovely addition.
